Minnesota was not only fighting the war in the South, In August of 1862 Minnesota became involved in a second war in its own backyard. Under the leadership of Chief Little Crow, the proud Native American Indian's known as the Dakota Sioux, rose up to take the Minnesota settlers by surprise, and Rice County also became involved with the Dakota Sioux War also called the Great Sioux Uprising. This was the begining of many Indian War's that did not end until 1890 with the battle of Wounded Knee in South Dakota.

Need some help? here is how to obtain important information about your Civil War Ancestor:

Now that you know the Regiment your ancestor was in, you can send to the National Archives for copies of the military and pension papers. You can email the National Archives to recieve the NATF form 80 inquire@arch2.nara.gov,requesting two forms, one for the military records and for pension. The Cost is $10.00 for each copy and I suggest using a credit card otherwise they locate the file, send it back to you with a request for payment. Military and pension records obtain diffrent information, Military records tell when or if they had a furlough, how much they were paid, when the soldier was present, they both sometimes have a physical description of the soldier, color of eyes, height, weight. Pension records tell sometimes where they lived, who obtained part of the pension.
