It's pretty obvious when the sows have their babies!! A number of people have asked us why we bother taking regular weight measurements. I guess there's a couple of reasons. One is that because we have a small "herd" size we can! The second is that we like to weigh our pigs particularly for monitoring their condition both during pregnancy and after they have littered. The weights can be a useful indicator of pregnancy (and unfortunately also abortions) in the sows. Also we like the sows to have stabilised their weight after littering, prior to rejoining them with a boar. For the young sows we prefer to mate them once they have reached 500g so the weight measurements are obviously useful for detecting this.
