Rowland MCKINNON was the only surviving son of Alexander MCKINNON and Maud (Nee) TAYLOR. He was born in Leeds, England on 21st July 1908.

Sometime around 1912-13 the family made their way to New Zealand to start a new life, settling in Christchurch. Later Rowland trained to be a bootmaker. He married Myrtle Agnes COLE on 27th August 1930 in Christchurch. Myrtle was the daughter of William Percival COLE and his wife Elizabeth (Liz) Agnes THOMAS, and was born in Christchurch on 27th January 1910. Elizabeth's parents were Henry THOMAS and Sarah BRUCE. Sarah's parents were Jonathan BRUCE & Johanna MCGRATH. Henry's parents were John THOMAS & Anne CRADDOCK.

Myrtle died on 21st November 1973 in Christchurch. Rowland then married Elsie PITHY on 6th? August 1983. Elsie was born on 9th March 1914 and this was a second marriage for both of them.

Elsie outlives Rowland, who died in Christchurch on 30th November 1989. He lies in the rose gardens at the Johns Rd Crematorium Chapel in Christchurch, New Zealand. Elsie still lives in Christchurch.
