SCHOOL TRUSTEES |
In most cases Trustees of Common School
Districts had a rather quiet and un-
eventful job. Often times patrons had to urge or beg a candidate to run for the office. Elections for School Trustees were always held in the month of April. However, a Trustee could be re-elected to a successive number of terms if he would consent to serve. |
The Trustees’ duties consisted of two categories
of responsibility which were
administrative and maintenance. The administrative duties were as follows: |
1. Approve the local school tax rate |
2. Interview and hire teachers |
3. Sign teachers’ pay vouchers |
4. Enumerate the scholastic census |
5. Approve student transfers |
6. Provide playground equipment |
7. Maintain building fire insurance |
8. Set general policies |
Under maintenance responsibilities, the Trustees would provide the following: |
1. Firewood for the wood heater |
2. Fix leaks in the roof, replace broken window panes, etc. |
3. Mow the playground |
4. Mend the school property fences |
5. Remove dangerous and hazardous items from the school grounds |
