Civil War Diary (cont.)

11th - Marched to Brashear City 10 miles.

25th - Crossed the Bayou to Berwick.

27th - I was taken sick with the ague.

29th - Captain Boardman and Lt. Grannis arrived from home.

October - The regiment started up Bayou Tesh and Jake Harndle and I were sent back to Carlton to convalescent camp. The regiment went on out to Franklin and Vermillion Bayou.

13th - Election Day.

14th - Captain Boardman started for home.

November 21st - The regiment got back to Algiers. Burt came over to the barricks and brought me some letters.

22nd - Embarked on steamer Corinthian for Texas and landed at Aransas Pass on the 26th.

28th - The marched for Matagorda Island.

December 2 - They arrived at Ft. Esparanza. December 5 crossed over to Decross Point.

29th - There was expedition started from New Orleans to go across Lake Pontchartrain to Madisonville. They went out to the Lake and stayed till the 4th of January. Then they embarked on the steamers M.P. Banks, St. Charles and Katedale and marine boat and another small boat. We started at 4:00 p.m. and in the morning were at the mouth of the Tchefuntcke River all except one boat and it run aground and it took 3 days to get her off. When we got her off we started up the river shelling the woods on both sides as we went. We got to Madisonville at 4 p.m. and landed. There had been some Rebels there, when they heard our gun boats firing they skedadeled. We stayed there about a month and built fortifications and then went back to New Orleans. There was 5,000 there when we left.

January 7th 1864 - The regiment went onboard a steamer for Indianola arrived there the same day.

12th - Moved to Old Town and had a skirmish with the Rebs.

February 10th - Captain Boardman and Col. Merrill got to the regiment and I embarked on board the steamer John Peabody for Texas. Arrived in Matagorda Island the morning of the 13th and layed there till afternoon and got on board the planter (?) over to Decross Point. Stayed there overnight and in the morning of the 14th went up to Indianola and from there marched up to Old Town.

March 13th - Marched for Matagorda Island and camped near Ft. Esperanza distance from Old Town 15 miles.

14th - Marched 4 miles and went into camp.

26th - Was payed for 2 months, I got 6 month pay.

May 21st - Went to Indianola on a scout and returned on the 22nd.

June 10 - Right wing of the regiment embarked onboard the steamer Alabama for New Orleans and started in the morning of the morning of the 11th and landed at New Orleans the 15th. Went into camp at the haunted lot, stayed there until the 18th when the left wing arrived and we all went into camp at Clay square. We stayed there till the 21st and then moved to Carlton. The 23rd left for Terre Bone Station at 8 a.m. got into Algiers at about 3 p.m. and got on the cars at 6 p.m. got to Terre Bone at 9 p.m. the 24th. Went into camp July 8, left for Algiers at 6 a.m. arrived at 9 a.m. the 9th, went into camp. 26th - Started for Morganza Bend at 8 am. and arrived there 2 a.m. on the 27th and went into camp at 8 a.m.

Morganza Bend, La.
August 9, 1864 - This has been a very cool day and rained a little this afternoon. We had company drill this forenoon, this afternoon we heard of the capture of Ft. Gaines and 800 prisoners and 46 guns. There was a expedition went from here yesterday and they sent in 7 prisoners last night and 11 this morning. It has been 2 years today since I enlisted.
