Civil War Diary (cont.)

August 10 - The weather has been fair and warm today, had drill this morning got a large mail but I did not get any. Had dress parade this evening.

August 11 - It has been raining most all day off and on. The boys have been hauling brush to make shades over our tents. There was a mail run this morning and I got a letter from James Sloam and answered it. We got news that Farrgut was shelling Mobile. There was 3 more regiments come here today. One was the 29th Iowa, one the 35th Illinois, and one some Ohio regiment.

August 12 - It has been rather a rainy day, we had company drill this morning and I made a ring for one of the boys. I have been on fatigue today.

August 16 - I have been sick for the last four days but I am getting better now. I got a letter from Emily she was at St. Louis. This morning there was regimental inspection and inspection of tents and all camp equipment.

August 17 - I rained pretty hard this forenoon, but cleared off this afternoon. There was a large mail this forenoon. I got a letter from Susy and some papers. There was also some letters and papers for Burt and I took them out to him for he was on guard.

August 18 - Today has been a very cool and pleasant day, it rained a very little. We were transferred to the 19th Army Corps today. Second brigade second division.

August 19 - This forenoon the weather was warm and pleasant, this afternoon it is cool and rainy. We have got orders to move camp tomorrow. I wrote a letter to Emily this afternoon.

August 21 - It rained all the forenoon, but has cleared off this afternoon. We draw rations today. The 23rd Wisconsin got orders to move to New Orleans.

August 22 - Yesterday nothing happened worthy of note. Today there was a small mail come for the regiment. The weather is good.

August 23 - Today has been a warm and pleasant day. There is a lot of troops going to leave here tonight. The Sutter brought a lot of new goods. There was 180 guards detailed out of our regiment this afternoon on account of the other troops going away. I made a ring today.

August 24 - The weather has been clear and very warm. We got news that Ft. Morgan is taken.

August 25 - The weather has been clear and warm today. There was a boat came down from Vicksburg this afternoon. There was 3 others come down the river. This morning some of our troops had a skirmish with the Rebs. They took several Rebs and horses prisoners. I made a ring this forenoon.

August 26 - Weather fair. I was on guard last night, got official news that Ft. Morgan is taken, with 600 men and 41 guns. I wrote a letter today to Uncle James, heard that there was fighting in the rear of Port Hudson this morning when the boat came by.

August 28 - The weather has been very warm today. The thermometer stood at 98 degrees in the shade. At 4 p.m. it began to cloud up and got a little cooler. At 5 p.m. I went on picket.

August 29 - I have just come off picket. The weather has been pretty warm most of the day. There was a very hard rain and wind storm last night. There was some Rebs tried to take one of our ambulances that took some wounded outside the lines but our Calvary picket drove them off. There was one of our scouts wounded yesterday in two places once in the arm and in the ankle. The troops that went down to Port Hudson last week got back this morning they took 15 prisoners and got about 200 of our men sunstruck. Quite a profitable expedition. There was two boats came down the river today, there was some of our furlowed boys came down on one of them. There was a man buried out of regiment today.

August 30 - Today has been pretty warm, this morning I went down to the fort and after I got back I made a ring and just before dark we got a mail. I got four letters, one from Erastus Morgan, one from Aunt Lucy, one Saphrana, and Lucy one. This is the first mail we have had for 2 weeks. I have just written a letter to Saphrana.

August 31 - We were mustered for pay this forenoon and this afternoon we got orders to be ready to march at a minutes notice. We drew 5 days rations this afternoon, it is raining now and I don’t think we will go tonight. I have just written 2 letter, one to Arba and one to Morgan.

September 1 - The weather has been fine today and there was mail for our regiment only one letter for our company.

September 2 - The weather has been very warm, the thermometer stood at 94 degrees. We got another mail last night. I got some papers, wrote a letter to Aunt Lucy. Heard cannoning up the river this morning but did not hear what is was for.

September 3 - Had reveler at 4:00 and got orders to get on the boat at 6:00. Had to bake a days rations of bread before starting. Got aboard the Illinois at 11:00 with the 99 Illinois and the 25th New York artillery and in the afternoon the 120 Ohio came aboard.

September 4 - We started this morning at 4:00, there is 8 boat loads of them. We passed the mouth of Red river at 7:00 and a quarter before 7 we met the Luminary, at 9 we passed a two terretted monitor. Golds and Grannis were sick and went on the hospital boat. A little after 9 we passed a small village where there was a gun boat. At 25 minutes past 1 we passed 2 more gun boats and at 6 we arrives a Naches where we stopped an hour and a half and then we started again.
