The Best Kind of Service
A mother with two sons became ill one day. She told them she would need their help while she rested in bed. The older son went to his room to listen to music. The younger son sat on the floor next to his mother and began coloring pictures for her.
The younger boy got out several pieces of paper and scattered crayons around where he sat. The mother asked him to bring her something cool to drink. He said he would do this after he was finished with the project he was working on for her. When he finally finished, the mother's request was forgotten, and he began a new project, leaving the papers and crayons on the ground.
The mother then asked her older son to bring her something cool to drink. He complained at first and said no, but brought her the drink, anyway. When the older boy saw how worn his mother looked, he asked if there was anything else he could do for her. She smiled and asked if he would fix lunch for himself and his brother. The older boy obeyed.
The mother called for the younger boy to put away the papers and crayons he had left out. He said he was too busy collecting bugs in a jar for her to look at. He agreed to clean his mess when he was finished. When he had collected all the bugs he wanted, he forgot about his agreement and began making something else for his mother.
At the end of the day, the mother regained some of her strength. She sat up and congratulated the older boy for all his help.
"What about me?" the younger boy asked. "I made pretty pictures, caught some bugs and cut out snowflakes. I did it all for you, Mom!"
"Those things are nice," the mother said, "but you only did what *you* wanted to do. You did none of the things I asked you to do. If you really love me, you will do what I need for you to do."
Scripture focus: "If you love me, you will obey what I command." -- John 14:15 NIV
What would really make Dad happy? * Whisper that you love him* Promise him 3 or 4 hours without yelling or fighting with anyone - and keep your word! * Ask him what he likes best about his work, and really listen to him. * Ask what you can do for him that day that would make him the happiest. Then do it, if you can. * Let him nap wherever he wants for as long as he wants. * Do what he tells you to do without asking why, without arguing, and without delay. * Do a chore without being told. * Pray for your dad and tell him you did it. |
Your Opinion:
Surprises are nice, but why should you do what you are told to do first?
