The German Alps & Garmisch

The photos on this page are form our trip to the German Alps during July 1996.  This was one of the most memorable trips we have made so far.  The mountains are beautiful and our campsite was at the base of one.  How beautiful!!  We took our bikes with us and traveled on the many bike trails that criss-cross Germany.  We have plans to go again, if we can find the time.

Carol and the kids in Bavaria.                                          Kevin on his bike in Garmisch.

These pictures were taken during one of our bike rides through the fields.  The scenery was so picturesque.  It was like riding through as postcard.

German house in Garmisch with famous fresco paintings.   Horse and buggy we rode to a gorge we hiked through.

We also spent time walking through the town and hiking on the local trails.  The town was different depending on where you go,  some areas are the typical resort/tourist traps, but others are beautiful.  Some of the houses are still covered with beautiful fresco paintings depicting simple German lifestyles or the surrounding Alps.

The Alps.                                                                         The Zugspitz.

Above all towered those beautiful mountains.  The town lies in the shadow of the tallest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitz.

KonigSchloss Neuschwanstein (Neuschwanstein Castle).   KonigSchloss Neuschwanstein (Neuschwanstein Castle).

Then there are the castles.  Neuschwanstein Castle is the typical fairy tale castle.  In fact, Walt Disney used it as a model for Cinderella's Castle at DisneyLand and Disney World.  There are the wonderful castles to visit in the area, including Linderhof Palace which is modeled after the French palace of Versailles.
