My maiden name was CALLOPY. My grandfather changed the spelling when he moved from Minnesota to Oregon in 1945. The COLLOPY family originated in Limerick, Ireland. My immigrant ancestor was Michael COLLOPY, who came to the United States in about 1864. He was a railroad man and ended up in Iowa, where he moved his family frequently, following the railroad. His son William was also a railroad man. He died while he was working on the railroad. His son, my grandfather Francis S. COLLOPY (a.k.a. Frank S. CALLOPY) worked for the railroad, too, until he moved to Portland, Oregon. He then went to work for United Freight as a diesel mechanic. My own father worked for the railroad, until he moved his family to California, where he eventually worked as a ranch foreman until his death. The closest any of my generation have come to following in the family footsteps is probably me, I love model railroads!
