He and Martha moved to Wisconsin and by family legend worked with the Underground Railroad. Jonathan eventually went into the military, where he served in the Wisconsin 18th Infantry. Family history says he was also a bridge builder during the war.
In later years Jonathan worked as a bridge builder with his son Waldron Cheyney Townsend.
Jonathan and Martha were the parents of seven children: Hannah Susan, Waldron Cheyney, Winfield Putnam, Alonzo W., Arthur Kenton, Ella and Warren. I descend from Arthur.
Arthur married Elizabeth Ellen Whitney and moved his family to Nebraska, where many of them still live.
