At this stage in Australia, the PWD is a very new breed.
There are now over 50 Portuguese Water Dogs in Australia. The two significant dogs in this country are owned by Bluegrace. These are Shelly (Ch Anji's Sea Shell de Alcedo - Imp US) who has 25 pups on the ground in Australia, and Bofors (Int Ch Biley's Bofor's Big Bang) who is expected (based on his current fertility!) to produce over 30 puppies.
We have a long term strategy to produce what we believe is the perfect Portuguese Water Dog. This work requires extensive research, travel, and networking to ensure that we take as many of the "correct" steps as possible, and learn as much as possible from our errors.

I believe these are the sort of issues that we should be concerned about:
Having a diverse gene pool
Recognising and managing health issues (Since health issues will never be eliminated in any breed, these issues have to be noted, measured where possible, and managed. To remove all dogs from breeding programs that had any health issues would mean the end of not just this breed, but all breeds.)
Educating people in the attributes of the breed
Only breeding from good quality dogs. This means that all dogs that are not show quality should be sold on spay/neuter terms, and only the best of the show quality dogs should be bred from.
Ensuring that our dogs are placed in good homes.
If you're interesting in hearing more about our dogs, or getting a puppy from us, we recommend you join our email list where we have created a great little community of like minded people who share stories and key learnings about PWD's.
