Mouswald, Scotland

The first Carruthers of Mouswald was Thomas who received the charter in the early 1300's from Robert the Bruce because of his staunch support of the struggle to oust the English from Scotland. The last holder of the title was Simon, 10th of Mouswald, who died July 1548 leaving only two daughters, Janet and Marion. The property then was acquired by Douglas of Drumlanrig. The ruined tower lies about a mile from the small village and its church. The tower remains are surrounded by a trailer park. The small white building in the center of the photo below is the Mouswald Church. To the left of the church is the village of Mouswald. To the right of the church, just off the picture, is the location of the Mouswald Tower.
