Westie Care
House Training
Training should begin by completely covering the floor where you are keeping your puppy at night with paper. It will not soil its bed unless he has to and will usually use the same area all the time. Gradually reduce the area the paper covers until you are just covering the area the puppy has claimed as his/hers. Gradually move the paper closer and closer to the outside world. Taking care to always keep one piece of the soiled paper to ensure the puppy doesnt "loose its way". If an accident occurs ensure you clean the area thoroughly to remove any scent. Use some of the soiled paper outdoors where you want the puppy to go.
The puppy will need to be taken outside:
-
First thing in the morning.
-
Before you go to bed.
-
About 1/2 hour after each meal.
-
About 1/2 hour after your puppy has a drink.
Initially you will have to carry the pup to the spot where the paper has been laid outside. When the puppy is finished give it plenty of praise and really make a big fuss. This way he/she will know you are pleased. Westies love nothing more than pleasing you and become very upset if you scold or ignore them.
Remember training your puppy depends on how vigilant and patient you are.
