THE SOO LOCKS--Page 2

Winnie Lowes Photo

This light house was once located at the west end of the Soo Locks. It disappeared some time after this 1916 view. Can anyone tell your webmaster when it was taken out of service?

The unidentified ship in the background, which is downbound, was one of the longer lake freighters back in August of 1928. The upbound A. H. FERBERT of Duluth is approaching the outer limits of the lock area.

Now well into the lock, the gate behind the FERBERT will soon be closed so that the boat can rise to the level of Lake Superior. In the distance is the open Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault St. Marie Ry. lift bridge which runs between the American Soo and the Canadian Soo. The bow of a downbound freighter also appears in the distance.

This was back in the good old days when tourists were allowed to stand right at the edge of the locks and even walk across the closed gates, as I did in 1929. The iron railing in the foreground is above the south leaf of the eastern gate. It was a safety precaution for pedestrians crossing to the opposite side of the lock.

Before the International Bridge was built, ferry service between Soo, Michigan and Soo, Ontario was provided by boats similar to the AGOMING shown here on August 8, 1928. It is surprising how many vehicles could be transported by this rather small vessel.
