In the mid 80's in two litters we had each one shorthaired puppy. Nobody followed up this affair because the breeder didn't see these puppies as adults. Since 1995 we had several litters with remarkable-coated puppies in different kennels.

Our breeding director decided to look into this phenomenon. Our first inquiries at our neighbouring breeders and dog clubs resulted in the impression that this problem seemed to be only German. A test mating confirmed our suspicion that the shorthair phenomenon might be due to a recessive gene. Comply with our breed-guidance outlook we handled the complete process including pre-history, results and photos with total transparency. We announced all known recessive-carriers to give our breeders the possibility to establish strategies for proposal matings. Through an immense distribution within our club the announcements received an international attention rapidly.

After the "shorthair-problem" this way turned to "fit for good society" we suddenly received messages from all over the world confirming that this phenomenon wasn't that unknown in the past as people tried to make us believe when we requested the first time.

But that's not all! When we look around the internet we can find homepages representing this standard default in a way that uninitiate people might get the impression a shorthaired Havanese would be "something special". It's unbelievable that breeders could get down to such a low level to try to legitimate untypical Havanese by awarding an pseudo-breed-termination instead of trying to breed and improve their breeding close to the standard and according the FCI-regulations. Such behavior must be due to commercial interests.

Serious kennel clubs and breeders will definately detest such tricks. Certainly it won't be possible to completely avoid default-haired Havanese puppies. As this means only an external aspect which doesn't cause any health-detriment for the affected dogs, there is no animal protecting conflict to grow up these puppies and care about selling them to responsible and loving homes.

Interested customers must to be informed from the beginning that these dogs have a serious standard default which suspends definitively from any breeding and showing career. A shorthaired Havanese is not a Havanese that only has a little bit shorter hair as usual and therefore maybe easier to groom. This default-hair can be longer rough coated, longer double coated (like Tibetspaniel) or smooth shorthaired (like Pinscher). Afflicted Havanese in some case don't match the external breed characteristics, so even a breed expert often can't identify such a dog as a Havanese. This discrepancy has to be reflected clearly in the purchace price.

A serious breeder would neither use the description "Shavanese" nor try to minimize such a serious standard default and get an astronimical price for this breeding failure.

Unfortunately shorthair-carriers don't show their disposition. In any case when you are looking for "your breeder" take care that the puppies have regular long and well-groomed hair as well as the adults. So you can expect not only a charming but also a true to standard Havanese.
