WILLIAM ALTUM(DECEASED)

DECEMBER 7, 1846

this is a son of James and Phebe Aultom and a brother to my gggggrandfather Spencer.  He was living in Lawrence County, Tennessee at the time of his death.  I found the articles          and the prices of goods interesting reading.  I hope you enjoy it as well:

Inventory & sale bill of the property of Wm. Altum dec'd - taken & sold on a twelve months credit This 25th Nov. 1846 -

1 looking glass, 1 clock, 1 cupboard, 1 Bed and stead (2.75)     

1 waggon, 1 log chain, 1 grind stone (26.31)                             

6 chairs, pair gear, 1 loom, 1 yoke of oxen (19.93)                     

1 sow & pigs, 1 Bedstead, 1 Bed & stead (11.55)                       

1 plow, 4 sheep, 1 filly, 1 filly (43.60)                                     

1 stack fodder, 1 grub hoe (2.00)                                           

100 lbs cotton, 1 Barrell & salt, Iron wedge (1.25)

ALSO:

Dec Term 1846-In odedience to the request of the last County Court we have proceeded to set apart the following articles for the widow Altum's years support; one hundred lbs of coffee & one hundred lbs Sugar, twenty bushels of wheat, one barrell of Salt, one cow & calf & one beef, 3 meat hogs, 60 barrels of corn, all the wool & picked cotton & all the yarn on hand, & 400 sheaves of oats & 400 sheaves of fodder, 1 mutton, all the soap on hand, all the potatoes on hand, 1 large kettle, 1 oven & lid, 1 skillet, 1 dinner pot, all the water & milk vessels on hand, & 1 fat stand & 2 sides of leather & sides of bacon, & 2 bushels of dried fruit, all the fowls & one dollar's worth pepper, spice & ginger.  This 24th of November 1846  Signed by TT Christian, Albert Floyd, and Samuel Long.


William's widow mentioned above was Esther(Kuykendall)Altum.  They were married in Caldwell County, Kentucky prior to moving to Tennessee to make their home.  They had the following children: Andrew Jackson, Elihu, Jane,Parmelia(Amelia),Elizabeth, William A. , David C., John, Phebe, and Esther not in that particular order.

Esther eventually sold part of the family farm to a man named Will Park, and the boys moved into Arkansas around the 1850's.  They settled around Falcon, AR. in Ouachita Co. Son, A.J., sold the rest of the family land through power of attorney to a Lawyer in Lawrence County, TN.

By 1860, Esther had moved to Arkasas and was living with one of her sons(William A.) and his family.  She was 65 years of age at that time.

As the Civil War began to rage four of Esther's sons joined the confederate forces in Arkansas:  Elihu, William A., David C. and John M.  (Elihu died in the war.)
