Emus: A Natural Wonder
Our 3 year old adult male
At Boxwood Farm we raise emus. They are a flight-less bird native
to Australia and now commercially raised around the world. This past year
was our first season breeding and raising these birds and it was quite
an adventure. Our two adult pairs laid 64 eggs. We incubated
about 45 eggs and hatched out about 35 chicks.

At present, we have 25 young birds that are living in a grow-out pen.
These birds will be used for their meat which only has one gram of
fat per serving and has an identical flavor as beef. The meat is
USDA approved and emus have recently been recognized by a national poultry
association as a separate commercial breed of poultry. The other
product that is made from emus is a therapeutic oil. This oil is
used in body lotions and is showing great promise as an anti-inflammatory
agent. A recent study out of Boston University sited emu oils' use
in burn victims. It found that skin treated with emu oil had less
scarring than similar burns treated with present burn creams.
