History of Boxwood Farm
Morning Fog
On the 12th day of March in 1837, William and Louise French founded
Boxwood Farm by subdividing land off of Green Level Farm. That land
was owned by Jefoce L. Fritts. This land was held by the French family
until May of 1850, when they sold it to Gideon and Sarah Marne of Stafford,
VA for a sum of Seventeen hundred dollars.
The Marnes lived on the property until 1881 and subsequently sold the
farm for three thousand dollars to Mary Reading of New Jersey. That
deed indicates that a farmhouse and barn were included on the land.
We do not know if that house is part of our present house or was a separate
structure. We believe the barn that is presently on the property
was built by the Marnes in the mid to late 1800's.
Late 1800's Farm House
The Readings lived on the farm until the 1960's. They built the present
farm house and raised dairy cattle. The farm was next sold to a Healey
he renovated the farm house during the seventies. Mr. Healey was
a psychologist for the county of Fairfax. It was during this period
that the farm became a hippie commune. In 1995 The Hostetter's purchased
the property and are working to restore it back to a working farm.
As we learn more history on the place we will update this history.
We hope to interview the Readings who's children still live in the county.
