Clint and Lona Hayes: Southgate, Michigan: 1965 - 1969 After Leon died, Clint and Lona realized they had to make a decision. Clints health was failing. It was more than Lona could manage to take care of him on her own. Leon had been there to help, but now he was gone. Their six remaining children were all living in Wayne County, Michigan and they wanted their parents near them. Clint and Lona needed their children, too, and they also hoped that the doctors in the more medically advanced region around Detroit would be able to help with Clints health problems. So it was decided they would move to Michigan. Bud found a home for Clint and Lona on Pearl Street in Southgate. They were content there and Clint was getting better medical care. Frequent visits to and from their children and grandchildren made life joyful. Clint and Lona's Grandchildren Leo's children: Jerry, Pat, Shirley, Peggy Leon's son: Ronnie Bud's children: Buddy, Sue, David Dell's daughter: Pam Gary's daughters: Barb, Lori, Carrie, Jennifer Lots of birthdays and holidays were celebrated at Clint and Lonas home in Southgate and the whole family was usually in attendance. Sometimes, the family would get together at Bud and Gins house on Grange Road in Trenton. In April of 1966, when Clint and Lona celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, their children decided to commemorate the occasion with a surprise party. But even with the improved medical care Clint received in Michigan, his health continued to decline. There were many trips in and out of the hospital. Finally, he could fight no more. Clint died in his Southgate home on September 6, 1969, at age 74. He was taken back to Barnesville, Tennessee, where he had lived most of his life, and buried near his three children and his parents. |
