If you could buy only one genealogy book or CD during your lifetime, I would HAVE to recommend a census book or CD of actual census page images sold by S-K Publishing. If you know an 1840 or 1850 county for your ancestors, you can have a copy of the entire census to browse through at your leisure and see the names of neighbors and probable relatives nearby...a good lead for the inlaws' surname!! Please note that I get no commission whatsoever and have no affiliation with this company, but their census books have been the most helpful genealogy sources I have found, and they have saved me many trips to the Archives!!
