The Anglican church in which Anthony and Jane were married. St Andrews is the Mother church of Plymouth, Devon. It was very badly bombed and all but destroyed in the second World War (as was a lot of Plymouth). The church was built between 1326 and 1441 and was "restored" in 1874, i.e. modernized to Victorian taste. (These photos were taken by and generously shared with me by Audrey Fawn.)

Menheniot Square and St Lalluwy church, probably where Jacob Ware Sr married Elizabeth CODE/COODE. St Lalluwy is one of the few Cornish churches with a spire and has the earliest known brass in the county. It is an inscription to Sir Ralph Carmynow d.1386. The whole of the church fabric is probably early 14C. The photo on the right was shared with me by Lynda Mudle-Small of Cornwall.

Jacob matriculated All Souls College at Oxford University 03/12/1674/75. His signature is shown below.

He graduated with a BA 1678/79. His signature is shown below.

He was Ordained by the Bishop of Exeter, Thomas Lamplugh, on 20 September 1679 at the Exeter Cathedral pictured below.

His name entry in the Ordination Registry is shown below.

Jacob's first service was Curate of the Parish Church of St. Ive (not St. Ives) in 1679.

Left: 16th century Curate's house beside the Anglican church at St. Ive, Cornwall, England, where Rev. Jacob Ware lived between his Oxford graduation in 1678 and his "voyage" to America in 1689. Right: Anglican parish church at St. Ive where Rev. Jacob Ware was Curate.

In the Cornish Glebe Terriers (documents of income, land, tithes and other property belonging to a particular parish), the Curate's cottage is described in Jacob's own handwriting: "House - A hall without a chimney, or a chamber over; a parlour planched and plastered overhead, with two chambers above; an entry with a little spence, with 2 little chambers above; a kitchen with a chamber above; a brewhouse with a little spence between it and the hall; stone walled and slate roofed, but all ruinous and in decay." This particular terrier was written by and signed by Jacob WARE and 2 Churchwardens. The term Glebe Terriers are specific to the Church of England. These documents often mention the tenants of the Glebe lands and/or the holders of the adjoining lands. It is the naming of these other individuals which makes Glebe Terriers of genealogical value for researchers with English ancestry. Terriers may be found in County Record Offices in England.

Jacob's signature on the Glebe Terrier is shown below.

Rev Jacob Ware Jr. was widowed by the time he came to VA in 1689.

A VERY SPECIAL THANKS to Cornwall gent Stuart Lindsay for driving from one end of Cornwall to the other, in order to take pictures of Menheniot and St. Ive. He found the residence of my 17th century ancestor and also the church where he served as Curate. He also gained access to the tower and took aerial shots. To see additional photos of Menheniot and the parish church at St. Ive, click HERE. To visit Stuart's website, click HERE.

ALSO THANKS to Apex ... for sharing their marvelous photo of the magnificent Exeter Cathedral. You can see more of their offerings by clicking HERE.
