Diego Storn's Travel Diary

From Diego Storn’s Diary #5

The sudden gale which caught our little boat almost killed both of us. Mercifully, both Jasper and I managed to stay on board through the storm, but then the tempest ended as quickly as it began. But our sail was torn and our mast broken. When I looked up, I saw the mysterious outline of a dark island on the horizon, and our boat seemed to drift purposefully toward it.
The boat came to shore on a beach of dark brown sand. Rocky cliffs lurched above the beach. I picked up Jasper and our provisions and climbed out of the boat. The two of us started walking along the beach, and then it struck me--there were human footprints in the sand here. Jasper started whining and I looked up, only to see two figures approaching us. Both were dressed in loose robes, and at first I could not tell if they were men or women. I picked up Jasper again, and walked to them.
"Welcome Diego Storn" said one figure, and by the voice I could tell it was a woman. "We have been expecting you." "Do not be frightened" said another voice, again a woman's. You are on the Island of Mormallo, and we are servants of the Goddess. Our instructions are to bring you to our village so that you and your little friend can rest. Hello, there, Jasper. Nice doggie."
In shock, I followed along. Which Goddess? Evanda? or Avarra? Mormallo? Where had I heard that name before? Yet my Aldaran Gift (unreliable as it is)had not alerted me to trouble and I did not sense danger here. In fact, I felt calm, almost as if I were meant to be here. And I could sense no tension from my dog. In about fifteen minutes, we walked through a channel in the cliffs and there was the most magnificent sight I have ever seen, a city, a Darkovan Shangri La...
I am forbidden to tell you more of what I saw there. Needless to say, I am in awe. In a few days, the priestesses will provide Jasper and me with a new craft so that we can proceed on our mission to Dalereuth. I will say this, though. My experiences with the priestesses forced me to look in on myself. I realize now what caused me to try to torment others during the Thendara investigations.(Marcello, can you ever forgive me?) and why I lost my mind during the Aldaran Revolution. That knowledge will help me prevent a recurrence. But I must never permit myself to get into a position of power, otherwise I could again risk becoming the monster who almost unleashed himself on Darkover at Castle Aldaran.
