Accordingly, he is listed as 25-years old, born in Russia
[family records report that he is the son of Albert — it is
unknown if Albert ever came to the U.S.] during the month of
January 1875. His occupation is listed as ‘Operator’. His
year of immigration is listed as 1890 and he has been married
4-years (latter-half of 1895 or earlier-half of 1896) to Sophie
(nee SIEGEL) [family records report
that she is the daughter of Israel SIEGEL and Bessie
HOROWITZ — it is unknown if they ever
came to the U.S.] who is listed as being 26-years old, born
in Russia during the month of March 1874. She immigrated in 1891
and her occupation is listed as ‘Housekeeper’ and it is reported
that she is unable to read or write, nor can she speak English.
As of 1900, they have two children: Dora (whose real name is
Dorothy), age 3, born in Pennsylvania during the month of
January 1897, and Israel "Izzie", age 2, born in Pennsylvania
during the month of May 1898.
Samuel and family are not listed in the 1908 or 1909 Directories
for the city of Philadelphia, but they do appear in the 1910
Directory under the name KRASNEY, living at 1341 Brandywine
Street. Samuel’s profession is listed as ‘delicatessen’.
This name and address change is confirmed by the 1910 U.S. Census,
in the state of Pennsylvania, county and city of Philadelphia
where they are again listed at 1341 Brandywine Street, April 19,
1910 (district 197/page 5).
Samuel KRASNEY is now 35-years old, married 14-years, and his
occupation is listed as an ‘operator’ in a tailorshop.
[This seems to dispute the ‘delicatessen’ reference in the
city Directory, but the either the directory is wrong, or
possibly, he was too proud of his former profession to report
the delicatessen as his current employer?] Sophia [note
spelling change/misprint] is listed as being 36-years old
and she is now able to read and write.
As of 1910, they now have three children: Dorothy, age 13,
Israel, age 12, and Morris, age 7, born in Pennsylvania
during the latter-half of 1902 or the earlier-half of 1903.
On November 4, 1910, Rose KRASNEY (my grandmother) is born.
In the 1911 Directory, Samuel’s occupation has been changed
(corrected?) to ‘machine operator’.
Very little is known of the KRASNEY’s after this point
[I, unfortunately, did not get into genealogy until 2-years
after my grandmother’s passing]. The cemetery
records at Har Zion in Collingdale (a suburb) report the death
of Samuel KRASNEY on June 5, 1913 at the age of 38. His
address at the time is 805 Tasker Street in South Philadelphia.
They have yet to be found in the 1920 Census.
According family records, Albert KRASNEY died in Jun 1917. Again,
it is unknown if he ever came to the U.S.
Eldest daughter, Dora, married Adolph
ZIEFFERT. They had three children,
Bud (not his real name), Sylvia, and Bernice. Bud was/is a
pharmacist and an epileptic, and he married Barbara and moved
to Washington D.C. Sylvia married Leon
REEDNICK and they had two children, Sandy (who married Gary)
and Joey. Adolph died in April 1971.
Eldest son, Izzie, married Frances. They lived in Maryland and
had two sons, Sherman KRASNEY (who married a Sylvia) and another
son, whose name is unknown. Izzie died in January 1964.
Youngest son, Morris was hit by a car while getting off of a
trolley. He was carrying his little girl who suffered severe
injuries, resulting in retardation. Nothing else is known about
Morris at this point.
Youngest daughter, Rose KRASNEY married Louis Frank
WEISBERG on November 11, 1934.
They had two sons: Morton Stanley (my father) and Edward Harvey (my godfather and uncle). Sometime after 1938, they were living at 825-65th Avenue.
Flash forward to 1993...
After many months of dialysis, Rose KRASNEY WEISBERG goes into the hospital for quadruple bypass surgery on Friday, June 18, 1993. While in recovery (and prior to regaining consciousness) a blood clot appears in her leg. The need to amputate arises. The family makes the difficult decision to allow her to die in peace. She is removed from life support and passes away on Sunday, June 20, 1993. She is missed.
The rest of the modern day history of
WEISBERG is available upon request.
