The Known WEINER Family History

as compiled by Lawrence D. Weisberg

June 1997

Abraham WEINER (my great-great-grandfather) first appears in the United States in the 1880 U.S. Census, in the state of Pennsylvania, county of Venango, town of Oil City on Centre Street, June 7, 1880 (enumeration district 248/sheet #19). This residence was possibly a rooming house.

Accordingly, he is listed as 28-years old, born in Russia during either the latter-half of 1851 or the earlier-half of 1852. His occupation is that of ‘Notion Dealer’ (buttons, needles, etc.). He has been married one-year to Annie who is listed as being 22-years old, born in New York (of Russian parents) during either the latter-half of 1857 or the earlier-half of 1858. Her occupation is that of ‘Housekeeper’.

As of 1880, they have two daughters: Dolly, age 2, born in Pennsylvania during either the latter-half of 1877 or the earlier-half of 1878, and Libbie (my great-grandmother, whose real name is Elizabeth), age 1, born in Pennsylvania during either the latter-half of 1878 or the earlier-half of 1879.

History records the destruction of Oil City and the death of hundreds when burning oil rushed down Oil Creek from Titusville in the year 1892. Being a notions dealer, he would have most likely followed the oil rush which then headed north, new fields being discovered in the Bradford area near Kane Borough in McKean County.

Sure enough, the family next appear in the 1900 U.S. Census, in the state of Pennsylvania, county of McKean, town of Kane Borough at 418 Greeves, June 14, 1900 (enumeration district 111/sheet #15/94).

At this time, he is listed as 51-years old, born in Germany during the month of May 1849. His occupation is that of ‘Merchant’ and he is listed as being naturalized. He has been married 24-years to Annie who is listed as being 43-years old, born in New York (of German parents) during the month of September 1857.

They are now the parents of five daughters: Dolly, age 22, born during the month of February 1878 (occupation: clerk); Libbie, age 21, born during the month of May 1879; Carrie, age 16, born during the month of March 1884; Rebecca, age 13, born during the month of April 1887; and Gertrude, age 2, born during the latter-half of June 1879. The household also lists an 18 year-old Swedish cook named Annie (born July 1881).

Abraham WEINER and family next appear in a 1908 Directory for the City of Philadelphia, living at 3127 Montgomery Avenue. They also appear in the 1909, 1910, and 1911 Directories.

As of the 1910 U.S. Census, in the state of Pennsylvania, city of Philadelphia at 3127 Montgomery Avenue, as of April 22, 1910 (district 775/sheet #9A). Abraham is now 58-years old, German born during the last eight months of 1851 or the first four months of 1852 (same as the 1880 Census). His year of immigration in now listed as 1871. He is now a widower, Annie having died sometime between June 14, 1900 and April 22, 1910.

Three of the five daughters still live at home: Carrie, age 22 (only 6 years older than ten years ago!), Reeva (whose real name is Rebecca), age 19 (also only 6 years older), and Gertrude, age 12.

Elizabeth has been married to Isaac Newton WEISBERG for 3-years, and as of the 1910 U.S. Census, she is listed with her husband in the state of Pennsylvania, city of Philadelphia at 3234 Page, as of April 21, 1910 (district 778/ sheet #9B). She is now age 27 (again, only 6 years older than in 1900, but we know she was bron May 1879, so her actual age is 31) and they have one son: Louis Frank WEISBERG (my grandfather), age 2, born December 2, 1908.

The whereabouts of Dolly WEINER are unknown.

As of the 1920 U.S. Census, Isaac Newton WEISBERG and Elizabeth WEINER are found in the state of Pennsylvania, city of Philadelphia at 5632 Pine Street, as of January 2, 1910 (district 1750/sheet #1). Elizabeth is now 39-years old (12 years older than 10 years ago, but actually 40 turning 41 in May). They are the parents of two sons: Louis Frank, age 12, and Gerome Weiner, age 8, born May 14, 1911. He is mentally challenged, having not receive enough oxygen during birth. Also listed in the household is Elizabeth’s sister Gertrude, age 21.

Also, in an interesting twist, Isaac Newton WEISBERG’s brother, William Morris is listed as being married to a "Reeva H." in the state of New York, city of Manhattan, at 308 W. 97th Street, as of January 26, 1920 (district 695/ sheet #15A). She is now age 30, they were married 1913 in Pennsylvania, and they have one son: William W., age 3-8/12th (June 1916?).

By 1920, I lose track of Abraham WEINER (who presumably dies), and Carrie (who will eventually marry Samuel ROSE). Carrie dies March 25, 1955 and is buried in Roosevelt Cemetery, Trevose, Pennsylvania.

Gertrude eventually marries Edward SWOTES and they have at least one son, Alan. The date of her death of unknown.

Elizabeth WEINER WEISBERG dies on August 22, 1948 at age 68, and is buried in Roosevelt Cemetery, Trevose, Pennsylvania. She is buried alongside her husband Isaac Newton, both of their sons, Louis Frank and Gerome Weiner, Louis’s wife Rose KRASNEY, and Samuel and Carrie ROSE. There is an empty eighth plot, purchased presumably for the spouse of the never-married, Gerome.

The family which continues on, for all intents and purposes, are now known as WEISBERG.
