The Known WEISBERG Family History

as compiled by Lawrence D. Weisberg

June 1997

Louis WEISSBERG (my great-great-grandfather) first appears in the United States at 348 N. Second Street, in an 1888 Directory for the city of Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania.

In the 1892 Directory, he is still listed at 348 N. Second, but he also appears in a business listing, under the name "Greenfield & Weisberg" at 11 N. Second Street. (The Greenfield in question is Paul GREENFIELD, Louis’ brother-in-law).

In the 1895 Directory, both he and Paul appear to be living together at 405 S. Third Street. The business is still at 11 N. Second.

Louis’ next appearance is in the 1900 U.S. Census, in the state of Pennsylvania, county and city of Philadelphia at 1332 S. Eighth Street, June 2, 1900 (enumeration district 9/sheet 3/page 3).

Accordingly, he is listed as 45-years old, born in Austria-Hungary during the earlier-half of 1855. His occupation is listed as 'China Business'. He has been married 19-years (latter-half of 1880 or earlier-half of 1881) to Hannah (nee GREENFIELD) who is listed as being 41-years old, born in Austria-Hungary during the month of July 1858.

As of 1900, they have two sons: Isaac Newton (my great-grandfather), age 17, born in Philadelphia during the month of July 1882, and William Morris, age 11, born in Philadelphia during the month of April 1889.

The WEISBERG family next appear in a 1908 Directory for the city of Philadelphia. Hanna is listed as a widow (Louis evidently dies sometime between June 2, 1900 and 1908), living at 2553 N. 28th Street with her youngest son, Wm. Morris. Isaac Newton is living at 3234 Page (he has wed as described in the coming 1910 Census). The company of "Greenfield & Weisberg" seems to have been dissolved. Paul GREENFIELD now has a business that deals in 'willow-ware' (baskets) located at 53 N. Second Street. There is also a listing for "L. Weisberg Co." at 142 N. Second Street that deals in furnishings. This may or may not be my great-great-grandfather's company, but it is still located with a few blocks of the old "Greenfield & Weisberg", not to mention Paul GREENFIELD’s current business.

In the 1909 Directory for the city of Philadelphia, Hanna is no longer listed by herself and Wm. Morris has moved to 3217 Fontain Street.

In the 1910 Directory for the city of Philadelphia, "L. Weisberg Co." has moved to 165 N. Second Street. Paul GREENFIELD’s business is now listed as 'baskets'.

In the 1911 Directory, Hanna and Wm. M. are again listed together.

As of the 1910 U.S. Census, in the state of Pennsylvania, city of Philadelphia, Anna (Hannah) WEISBURG (note spelling change) is the head of the household, living at 3217 Fontain Street, as of April 21, 1910 (district 778/sheet 10B). She is now 52-years old, born in July (per the 1900 Census) 1857 (a 11-years older than in 1900). Her year of immigration is listed as 1876 (no year was given in 1900). She is a widow, as previously reported in the 1908 City Directory.

Also living with her is Morris (formerly, Wm. Morris) now age 21 and still single. His occupation is that of storekeeper (possibly the L. Weisberg Co.).

Eldest son, Isaac Newton WEISBURG and family are living at 3234 Page, as of April 21, 1910 (district 778/sheet 9B). He is 27-years old. His occupation is that of importer of enamalware (a form of china?... possibly the L. Weisberg Co. According to my grandmother, Rose KRASNEY WEISBERG [Louis Frank's future wife] he was schooled at the University of Pennsylvania as a dentist, though never practiced, taking over the family business when his father, Louis WEISSBERG died). He has been married for 3-years to Elizabeth (nee "Libbie" WEINER). She is also listed as 27-years old (though her family census records make her at least 30-years old [31 in May], being reported as age-1 in 1880). Again, according to my grandmother, she was educated at Oberland College, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree. Isaac and Elizabeth presently have one son: Louis Frank (my grandfather), age 2, born in Pennsylvania, December 2, 1908.

As of the 1920 U.S. Census, Isaac Newton WEISBERG (note final spelling change) and family are found in the state of Pennsylvania, city of Philadelphia at 5632 Pine Street, as of January 2, 1910 (district 1750/sheet #1). Isaac is now 37-years old and is employed as a salesman of silks. Elizabeth is now 39-years old (12 years older than 10 years ago, but actually 40 turning 41 in May). They are the parents of two sons: Louis Frank, age 12, born December 2, 1908, and Gerome Weiner, age 8, born May 14, 1911. He is mentally challenged, having not receive enough oxygen during birth. Also listed in the household is Elizabeth’s youngest sister Gertrude, age 21.

Also, in an interesting twist, William Morris is listed as being married to a "Reeva H." (nee WEINER ... a younger sister of Elizabeth) in the state of New York, city of Manhattan, at 308 W. 97th Street, as of January 26, 1920 (district 695/sheet #15A). William Morris is now age 30, and his trade is listed as ‘commercial’, the nature being ‘women’s underwear’. Reeva is now age 30, they were married 1913 in Pennsylvania, and they have one son: William W., age 3-8/12th (June 1916?). Nothing more is known of William Morris WEISBERG and his family.

Through old books that have been handed down to me, I know that as of 1923, Isaac and family were still at 5632 Pine Street.

Eldest son, Louis Frank WEISBERG marries Rose KRASNEY on November 11, 1934. They have two sons: Morton Stanley (my father) and Edward Harvey (my godfather and uncle). Sometime after 1938, they are living at 825-65th Avenue.

Isaac Newton WEISBERG dies November 24, 1942 at age 60, and Elizabeth WEINER WEISBERG dies on August 22, 1948 at age 68 and is buried in Roosevelt Cemetery, Trevose, Pennsylvania. Prior to her death, she purchased an eight-plot lot for herself and Isaac, both of their sons, Louis Frank and Gerome Weiner, Louis’s wife Rose KRASNEY, and Samuel ROSE and his wife, Carrie (nee WEINER) . There is an eighth plot, purchased presumably for the spouse of the never-married, Gerome, which remains empty to this day.

The rest of the modern day history is available upon request.
