Thomas Sterling Ruffin
"Joanne McIntyre" jmcintyre@gowebway.comMy grandfather was Thomas Sterling Ruffin who married Claudie Plant on 10 May, 1888 in Tallapoosa County, AL and lived on a farm in Reeltown. He died in 1914 and was buried in Macon County (probably Notasulga). They had 4 children: William Herman, Roland J, John Carl, and Ralph. After his death, she and Ralph kept boarders in Reeltown--all young women teachers who taught in East Tallassee. Later she managed the Talisi Hotel and died in Elmore County (Tallassee) in 1933. Am very interested in any information about this family.
One of their sons was John Carl Ruffin, my father.
It states that his parent's were Thomas Sterling Ruffin and Claudie Ann Plant and he was born on 12 Nov. 1896 in Notasulga, AL (Lee County). I have no birth records on Thomas Sterling (maybe around 1868?) and no way to trace his parents. They could have come from AL, GA,NC or VA as many Ruffins did.
John Carl is buried in NC and I have records of that, but nothing on the death of Thomas Sterling Ruffin.possibly connected to: William Ruffin, born in GA, married Nancy Nix (also born in GA) in Loachapoka, Macon County, AL in 1857.

I cannot find them in Alabama in the 1860 Census, but found a Nancy Ruffin in the same location in the 1870 census with two sons, Thomas and John, ages 11 and 9, and again in the 1880 census in the same place (the county was changed to Lee County in 1886).
My problem is that I need a birth record to prove that Thomas Sterling was indeed the son of William and Nancy and I need to trace the brother, John. Also need to find the parents of William and Nancy in the GA records. If you have any suggestions or have any connections who might have information on this family, I would be so grateful.

John Thomas Ruffin
Martha Ann "Mattie" Ruffin married John Elias WEBB "near Loachapoka,AL" in 1874. Family Bible says she was the Daughter of John Thomas RUFFIN. Mattie and John had two children... William Ruffin WEBB (1875, Newberry, SC - 1895, Hidalgo, TX) and Sarah Cordelia WEBB. Sarah Cordelia lived only about 6 weeks and was buried with her mother 7/11/1880. To our knowledge William Ruffin Webb never married nor had any children. So this little twig of the RUFFINs comes to a close. Is John Thomas RUFFIN ( 7 June 1829 - 20 Dec 1851) her father? I have a note that says Mattie Ruffin was John Elias Webb's cousin...but I don't have the connection yet. John Elias's mother was a WORSHAM, but I don't know HER mother's maiden name. So I don't know on what line the RUFFINs were cousins to the WEBBs -- WEBB, WORSHAM, or whatever Mrs. Worsham's maiden name was? Establishing this connection MIGHT help me figure out some other relationships in the family..
William Ruffin WEBB died in Hidalgo, TX 10/14/1895 according to the family Bible. As the family lived in the Collin/Grayson/Dallas Co area, and he doesn't seem to be buried there, we are looking for his grave and also any clues that might give us an idea as to what he was doing in Hidalgo Co.. If there were other WEBB families there, perhaps we was visiting relatives and we can find a link. He was only 20 and a couple of months when he died. Any ideas, clues, suggestions, creative fancies, or concrete information as to his death and burial location, as well as his presence in the area would be appreciated.

William Ruffin of Cincinnati #15 Monk's Missing Ruffin
Additional Material
In The Biographical Encyclopedia of Ohio of The Nineteenth Century (Columbus, Ohio, Galaxy Publishing Company, 1876), it was stated that James L. Ruffin, Captain, son of William Ruffin and Elizabeth Rue, was the eighth of eleven children. Thrown into the mix was a statement in the 11 August 1834 issue of the Baltimore Patriot, page 13, (GenealogyBank.com) that said Major William Ruffin had died at the residence of his son-in-law Major Hopkins in St. Louis in his 66th year. From the Baltimore Gazette And Daily Advertiser, Page 3 dated 07 June 1834 (GenealogyBank.com), It asserted that Major William Ruffins youngest daughter, Harriet Oliver Ruffin married David T. Monsarrat in Cincinnati on 29 May 1834. The death of William Oliver, Major, (and husband of Williams daughter, Eliza), was given as 28 December 1851 (North American And United States Gazette, Pennsylvania, 30 December 1851, Page 2, GenealogyBank.com.).
Taking the aforementioned data, cemetery and federal census records, more information appeared about this family; however, who William Ruffins parents were has still not emerged. Research into original and supplemental records in archival and historical repositories in Columbus and Cincinnati might provide the clues.

This material does not account for 11 children of William and Elizabeth Ruffin, as their son James, mentioned. This child would have been born after James. In the 1830 federal census a child under five years of age was in the home but without further data, we have no way of knowing if this was the missing child or if this child was a grandchild. No other record was found mentioning an 11th child.
Note that both Charles K. and Samuel N. Ruffin, children of the first Samuel N. Ruffin were mustered into Company I, Ohio 110th Infantry on 29 January 1864. Charles K. was discharged for wounds 20 March 1865 in Cincinnati. Samuel N. was mustered out in Washington, D.C. on 25 June 1865.

From The National intelligencer, August 12, 1834, Page 758, it noted that Major William Ruffin of Cincinnati died 25 July 1834 in Saint Louis, MO in the "66th year of his age". [1768]
"He was one of the pioneers of the West, and among the early settlers of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was with St. Clair's army and partook of the military campaigns of St. Clair and Wayne. For many years he was postmaster of Cincinnati and subsequently served 2 terms as Sheriff of Hamilton Co., Ohio."
He's listed in the 1830 Hamilton County, Ohio census as:1 male under 5 1 male 15-20 2 males 21-30 1 male 50-60 1 female 10-15 2 females 15-20 1 female 50-60In some respects, a blended family. This would pretty well confirm that somewhere between the 1830 census and his death in St. Louis in 1834, he went to MO.
Didn't find any Ruffins in MO in 1840.
Found a Samuel N. Ruffin in Hamilton County in 1840 (same Cincinnati, Ward 2 as William was in in 1830) with:
2 males under 5 1 male 5-10 1 male 20-30 2 females 5-10 1 female 10-15 1 female 15-20 1 female 20-30http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/postmasters.html
Major William Ruffin was appointed postmaster July, 1797 and served for about 17 years. His red two-story frame house stood at Columbia and Lawrence Streets. There Ruffin fixed up a booth with glass doors in the corner of a room where he dispensed the mail.

Napoleon Ruffin born in Meridian, Mississippi, 19?? Napoleon died in late 1915 or early 1916. On May 24,1915 my gr/father Roosevelt Ruffin was born in Meridian MS. Shortly after Napoleon's death the family moved to Barfield AR, where Roosevelt grew up. On October 26, 1936, he married Willie Mae Richardson. They moved a short distance away to Armorel, AR. Between 1936 and 1945 they had six children Rosie, Charlestine (my mother), Margaret, Roosevelt Jr., Prince, and Donald. Willie Mae and Roosevelt later divorced and he moved to OH and started a new family while she stayed in AR but moved to Blytheville, AR where she stayed until her death in July 2000. Napoleon Ruffin had siblings but I'm told he was the only Ruffin. I'm presently trying to search the Meridian MS area for more branches of the tree. Ron Britman rbritman@home.com

Mary Albertine Ruffin (b. 15 Sept 1923) m'd in 1944 Jansen Hasbrouck Rogers (b. 9 Nov. 1920) Author's Note: The above information on teh children is listed in 1850 Hardeman County Tn Census. The 1880 census of Toone Station, Tn states that Willilam Brookd Ruffin and Harriett Wilson Jones were born in North Carolina. The 1850 census shows a John Ruffin, age 70 as living in the same dwelling and state that he was born in Virginia. According to his age as listed in teh 1850 census (70 years old), John Ruffing was born around 1780. The confusion as to whether he was born in North Carolina or Virginia may stem from the fact that during thios period Virginia claimed all the land from its present boundary directly West to the Mississippi River and North Carolina claimed it also. Contributed by: Karen TNKSL@aol.com Another Researcher for this line: Kerry Moore a0023336@airmail.net contributed this material: 1) Arthur (Artha) Brooks was born in VA between 1720&30, but moved to Caswell/Person Co. NC where he raised a large family. 2) His sons, Arthur and Matthew and perhaps other sons, moved to TN and were in Hardeman Co. in the 1850 census, and are found as neighbors to D W Ruffin, William Brooks Ruffin and Robert Ruffin. 3) Agnes and John named a son William BROOKS. 4) There is a marriage record in Person Co., NC for John Ruffin and Agnis Brook,3 October 1798, Abner Chambers and J. Womack. (Person County North Carolina Marriage Records ,1792-1868 Katherine Kerr author Ruth Saloom" ruthsal@bellsouth.net 5) John was living with W B Ruffin in the 1850 Census at age 70 and gave his birthplace as VA. This is consistant with a marriage in Person Co. NC (on the border with VA) in 1798. 6) The oldest brother, D W Ruffin, was born 1800 in NC; consistant with point 4). 7) FINALLY, in a letter written in 1914 (I have a copy), my Ggfather Calvin Hurlock Brooks, then about 90, in writing about his family history said that about 1850 he was introduced to a daughter of Arthur Brooks "Mrs. John Ruffin of Hardeman Co., TN". At the time, CH Brooks was living with his father's family in Madison Co., TN.Click here to send e-mail to Virginia Crilley.
