Garden Chronology of Colt Mazeau
2005 (Year 7)
I started the year off with a new garden cart (a Christmas gift). I keep it chained to the fence with a bicycle lock so that it won't be stolen like the previous one.
- INVESTMENTS:
-
Leased plot, $30; bicycle lock, $9; vegetable and flower seeds, $19;
tomato plants, $5. Total: $63
- WEEDS:
-
Chickweed was the biggest problem early in the season. Ailanthus, grass, and bindweed are pests during the summer, but I've been managing to keep up with the weeding, thanks to the large quantities of mulch I put down.
- RODENTS:
-
I've seen evidence of deer. Something polished off the few carrots and beets that sprouted and has attacked the black-eyed peas.
- WINTER CROP RESULTS:
-
Spinach did not come up.
- SUMMER CROPS PLANTED:
-
From seed: spinach, beets, licorice, carrots, basil, cone flowers, baby's breath, orange cosmos, dill, green peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, and black-eyed peas. Plants: tomatoes. The baby's breath, orange cosmos, dill, cucumbers, and tomatoes from plants were successful.
- WINTER CROPS PLANTED:
-
Spinach and annual ryegrass.
- PERENNIALS:
-
No new perennials planted.
