Please don't rush out and buy the first adorable Springer you see, they all are. First, determine if you are suited for a Springer and vice versa. Perhaps buy a book on English Springers, or do a few searches on the internet for breed information. Go to dog shows, obedience trials, tracking events, agility matches, field trials or hunt tests and meet some Springers in-person. Once you're sure the Springer is the dog for you, contact the national breed club at:
ESSFTA

Request a list of breeders in your area. Supplying postage for this request would be helpful, but is not mandatory. Breeders who are members of the national breed club are expected to adhere to a code of ethics, outlined in the ESSFTA's "Spaniel Manual".

Quality Not Quantity....

Responsible breeders screen & certify the health of all dogs with potential for breeding. Their goal is to improve the breed, and only produce occasional litters of the healthiest puppies possible. Pups should be CERF certified before being placed in new homes, and certificates of health should go home with the new owners of each pup. Ethical breeders rarely (if ever) make any profit.
Motivation to purchase a dog should NOT be profit! People shouldn't expect to "get their money back" out of their dog any more than they expect to "get their money back" out of their children. If your primary desire for owning a dog isn't companionship, please consider a pet rock instead.

Thoughts On Responsible Breeding

rescues

Have you thought about rescuing a homeless adult Springer?

By in large, most Springers end up homeless through no fault of their own. Victims of human circumstance
if you will. However, many owners declare that a rescued dog is more loving than others. That the dog seems to know it's life was saved and is eternally grateful to the human who opened their heart & home for it.
A rescued Springer comes "ready to love"! They've had a vet check-up, are up-to-date on their vaccinations,
and have already been either spayed or neutered.

A rescued Springer may be the dog for you if....
Your conscience won't let you buy a puppy
You don't have the time or desire to train a young pup
Perhaps you've lost your best Springer buddy and miss
the companionship of an adult Springer
You already have a Springer and can't resist adding
another to your family
You just simply adore Springers!

***Did you know....***

An ILP registration can be obtained from the AKC for a rescued purebred dog? This would make your rescued Springer eligible to compete in AKC obedience or agility events. Personally, I enjoy thinking up and deciding on a registered name. Besides being purebred, the only other requirement for an ILP registration is that your dog has been spayed or neutered.

If a rescued Springer interests you....
Contact shelters in your area, some will put you on a waiting list for a specific breed. There are also numerous shelters on-line, as well as English Springer Spaniel rescues.

Field-bred or Bench-bred....

There are 2 types of Springers to decide between. Field-bred are bred for their hunting instincts and abilities. They tend to be smaller, lighter boned, with shorter ears, and much less fur. Bench-bred are bred for their conformation to the breed standard. They are larger, heavier boned, with longer ears, and elegant feathering. Either type of Springer can make a wonderful companion or family pet. Properly trained, either type of Springer can also participate in obedience trials, agility events, tracking, or even as therapy dogs visiting hospitals and rest homes.
