Maria Holmes was born in Ireland in about 1825.
At the age of 16, Maria immigrated from the port of Liverpool on the "Champion" arriving at Sydney on February 12th 1842. She had come out with William Holmes (an older relative, perhaps an uncle) and his family, and three sisters and a brother. The voyage, at 108 days was longer than normal. Maria came out with the expectation of becoming a house servant.
Maria resided with her family in Macquarie street, in Sydney, NSW in January 1851 at 25 years of age. At about this time her adopted father was a Inspector with the NSW Police Force.
She married Henry Hugh Hill at the Presbyterian manse on September 1st, 1863 in Rockhampton, Queensland at 38 years of age. Henry had been previously married to Maria’s sister Bridget Holmes at St. James' church on January 20th 1851 in Sydney, NSW, and had had two children by her (the youngest about ten years old). Maria, and Henry Hugh Hill, became the parents of Joseph William Hill about 1869 in Rockhampton, Queensland. He eventually became a sucessful Sydney accountant.
