About the "Indian Rolls": The "Indian rolls," collections of information about Native American individuals during various years, were created primarily to ensure that the Native Americans, and only Native Americans, were each given their allotment, and only one allotment, as dictated by government rule at the time that each roll was created. A list below tells the reason for each separate "roll": 1817 Reservation Roll - A listing of those desiring a 640 acre tract of land in the East in lieu of removing to Arkansas. 1817-1835 Emigration Roll - Those who voluntarily enrolled themselves to emigrate West 1835 Henderson Roll - aka 1835 Census of Cherokees - aka Trail of Tears - A listing of those from Tennessee and including Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia, who were forcibly removed to Oklahoma 1848 Mullay Roll - A list of 1,517 Cherokees who remained in North Carolina after the 1838 removal 1851 Siler Roll - A listing of about 1700 Cherokees entitled to payment 1851 Old Settlers Roll - A listing of those still living who were residing in the West prior to 1839 1852 Chapman Roll - A listing of Eastern Cherokees receiving payment based on the Siler Roll of 1851 1852 Drennen Roll - aka Emigration Roll - A listing of those who went West after 1835 1869 Swetland Roll - Cherokees and their descendants who were listed as remaining in NC by Mullay in 1848 1880 Rolls of the Cherokee Nation - Indian Territory -- A roll authorized and work done by the Cherokee Nation; it includes the 9 Cherokee Districts in the Indian Territory; also includes other Indians, whites and blacks living in those areas 1880 & 1890 Rolls of the Cherokee Nation - Indian Territory - Canadian Districts only 1893 Hester Roll - A listing of Eastern Cherokees in 1883 1898-1914 Dawes Rolls - Was to be the first roll for alloting land and terminating the Cherokee in the Indian Territory; upon reorganization of the Cherokee Nation in the 1970's, it became the only means of certifying membership 1908 Churchill Roll - Roll used to certify members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee 1909 Guion Miller Roll - Listings of Cherokee residing either east or west of the Mississippi; excludes the "Old Settlers", those residing in Indian Territory prior to 1839 1924 Baker Roll - Was to have been the final roll of the Eastern Cherokee |
