DON’T GIVE ME A MANSION

1
You promised, Lord, that You would go, prepare for us a place,
And I know that we'll go there, thanks to Your amazing grace;
We’ll live in New Jerusalem, and stroll that golden street,
And gratefully lay down our crowns at Your anointed feet.
But, Lord, You know how many times I’ve failed to do Your will,
And I’m amazed, with all my sins, that You could love me still.
The Holy City, where there’ll be no sickness, tears or loss,
Is much too good for one whose sins condemned You to the cross.
•
(chorus)
I haven’t earned a mansion, Lord; just build me an old shack;
A sinner such as I should have a room somewhere out back.
I don’t deserve to gaze upon that wondrous crystal sea;
So don’t give me a mansion, Lord; just let me live near Thee.

2
Don’t let me through the pearly gates, just sneak me in the side;
I couldn’t face the angels, since it was for me You died.
I can’t imagine being there with Peter, John and Paul;
So I’ll just stand off to the side, and wait for You to call.
I can’t begin to tell You of my gratitude and love,
For giving Your own life so I could live with You above;
So when I bring the crown You gave me, to that blessed land,
Just wipe off all the fingerprints left by my blood-stained hands.
•
(chorus)
I haven’t earned a mansion, Lord; just build me an old shack;
A sinner such as I should have a humble room out back.
I don’t deserve to walk beside that wondrous crystal sea;
So don’t give me a mansion, Lord; just let me live near Thee.
•
I don’t deserve to live beside that wondrous crystal sea;
So don’t give me a mansion, Lord; just let me live near Thee.
