I AIN’T NEVER HAD IT SO GOOD

Well, I’m getting old, I’m a sight to behold,
And my hearing is going away.
My sight’s getting worse, my weight is a curse,
And my hair is increasingly gray.
There’s an ache in my bones, my nails are ingrown,
And I can’t exercise like I should.
But with every moan, I am closer to home,
So I ain’t never had it so good.
•
(chorus)
I just gotta shout, ‘cause I have no doubt,
my Master’s up there waiting for me.
I don’t have a care, ‘cause I’m going there,
and I’ll live with Him eternally.
My troubles and woes seem bad, I suppose;
and I’m always being misunderstood.
But they won’t get me down, 'cause I’m Heaven-bound,
so I ain’t never had it so good.

I can’t pay the rent, ‘cause my money’s all spent
Long before there’s any more on the way.
The weeks just drag on, and my paychecks are gone,
And I’ve got overdue bills to pay.
It appears my old shack has been under attack,
I’ve got holes in the roof and the walls.
My car’s broken down, it won’t make it to town;
If I drive it, it just sputters and stalls.

My wife’s getting mad, and the kids looking sad,
‘Cause I can’t afford new clothes or new games.
I feel like a jerk when I mess up at work,
And the boss calls me all sorts of names..
I may have to search for another new church,
And I’m laughed at in my own neighborhood.
But Heaven’s in sight, so I’m feeling alright,
And I ain’t never had it so good.

(tag)
No, they can’t keep me down, ‘cause I’m getting a crown,
And I ain’t never had it so good!
