Song Lyrics
MY OLD MAN

-1-
I want to introduce you to the leader of the clan,
Who taught us how to live for God, and love our fellowman.
He showed us, by example, how to act and be successful:
Walk daily in the narrow way, however hard or stressful.
Some people think you have to drink and cuss to be a man,
Or make the world believe that you’re the meanest in the land.
But I’m so glad that I was shown the glory of salvation;
I built my life on faith and love, not others’ admiration.

(CHORUS)
Well, “Pops” just doesn’t show respect, but “Father” sounds too formal;
And life with him has never been what folks consider normal.
But I’ll stand proud beside him some day, in that promised land;
I thank God every day for my “old man”.

I’ve read that Jesus told us we must turn the other cheek,
He said the Earth is promised to the humble and the meek,
I’ve seen in my “old man” the proof that Jesus’ words are true:
He has more “other cheeks” than anyone I ever knew.
He’s never been the settled kind, but preached in many lands;
We lived in far-off places, moved around like gypsy bands.
He faithfully accepted God’s great missionary call,
And I’m so proud that I worked with a modern-era Paul.

Though age has slowed him down a bit, as time will take its toll;
There’s still a twinkle in his eye, and still a heart of gold.
And I respect his wisdom and his knowledge of this life:
He even knew just where to look to find the perfect wife!
I gladly count on his advice, when problems come to call;
I’ve seen him face the toughest ones, and somehow solve them all.
And though he’s not as tall as me, I hope he’ll understand
That I will always, lovingly, look up to my “old man”.

(TAG)
And when I stand before my Master, in that blessed land,
I’ll thank Him, face to face, for my “old man”.
