Song Lyrics

A TALK WITH MY LORD
                                ©1995, John A.Poe,Jr.

1
I didn't get to go to my church last week,
I was sick so I just stayed home in bed;
I called and made excuses to my Sunday School class,
I couldn't help what anyone said;
I felt a little guilty about missing the service,
So I got down on my knees and I prayed;
The Lord and I had us a lively conversation;
I remember that it happened this way:
 (chorus)
      I told Him all about my poor aching back,
      And He showed me His stripes and His welts;
      I said, "My arthritis hurts my hands and my feet",
      And He showed me the holes from those nails;
      I said I had a headache that was hurting so bad,
      And He showed me the scars from the thorns;
      And when I said, "I'll live for you",  He softly said, "My child,
      I died for you before you were born."
2
I said, "My Lord, I wish I could be doing your work,
But I can't give up my job and my home;"
He reminded me about the golden city He'd left,
Where He sat upon a heavenly throne;
I told Him, "I'm afraid they will laugh at me",
And He recalled how He was spat on and scorned;
I said, "I am afraid to die"; He lovingly replied,
"I'll awake you on that glorious morn."
3
I told Him I'd been working hard to buy me a boat,
He said, "Walk with me and you'll walk on water";
I said, "I've got responsibilities for my kids",
He said, "The lost are your sons and your daughters";
I said, "Lord, I can't seem to overcome the temptations
That surround me on every side";
He replied, "I was human too, but led a pure life,
And then for your sins, I bled and died."
 •
(chorus)
I told Him all about my poor aching back,
      And He showed me His stripes and His welts;
      I said, "My arthritis hurts my hands and my feet",
      And He showed me the holes from those nails;
      I said I had a headache that was hurting so bad,
      And He showed me the scars from the thorns;
      And when I said, "I'll live for you",  He softly said, "My child,
      I died for you before you were born."
 •
And when I said, "I'll live for you," He softly said,
"I lived and died for you, before you were born....."
