George is probably the father of the Christina MARKLE who married Peter SHEARER. The MERKEL/MARKLEs lived in Richmond Township as did the SHEARERs and had interactions with each other. Peter SHEARER enlisted in the Revolutionary Army with George's son Christian and Peter's brother Frederick married George's daughter Rebecca. No other Christina MERKEL/MARKLE of this generation could be located. One reference cites Christina as marrying Benjamin POTT, but this can not be documented and Christina was apparently 3-7 years older than Benjamin. Therefore, pending proof to the contrary, I am considering George MERKEL to probably be Peter SHEARER's father-in-law.
A patent for 63 acres was issued to George, in right of Christian Rodarmel, to land called oblongus in Richmond Township by Thomas and John Penn, sons of William Penn, on 20 June 1753. On 13 Febraury 1760, he bought 255 acres of land in Maidencreek Township, Berks Co., from the George Boone Estate. George was naturalized in Philadelphia on 20 September 1764. By 1767 George owned 300 acres of land, a saw mill, a grist mill, 5 horses, 12 cattle, and 10 sheep. He built the mill in 1749. In 1767 he built the "New Mansion", a large native stone colonial house, the basement of which was built to be a fort with small openings for guns and built over the Moselem Creek so no one would have to expose themselves to get water during an attack. George served during the Revolutionary War in Captain Peter Nagel's Company, Berks Co. Militia. He is buried at Moselem Cemetery.
