President's Message
Our Season Arrives - Summer
Dear Fellow Belle Harborite,
On behalf of the Board of Directors and Officers of your Association,
I would like to wish you and your family a healthy and fun-filled
summer.
Summer is a wonderful time in Belle Harbor - a time to enjoy
Rockaway's wealth of natural resources. Last month, our annual
clean-up readied the beaches for you to use. During the summer,
we will continue to pursue an honest, holistic anti-erosion strategy
so that the beach is preserved for ourselves and our children.
The Association's June 20th meeting will be our last until
September but we will be on the job all summer. We encourage
our membership to stay aware of the pressing issues that effect
Belle Harbor and the Rockaway community and to share your thoughts
and ideas. If you have any problems over the summer, you can
contact me at 945-6543 or our Vice President Charles Meier at
318-4665.
We hope you have a wonderful summer.
Sincerely,
Jack King

Don't Pollute the Bay with Dog's Dirt
On Friday, March 31st a meeting was held at Assemblywoman
Audrey Pheffer's office to discuss the problem of dog waste in
our storm drains.
Some dog owners are using our storm drains to dispose of this
waste. This practice is not only against the law, it is unhealthy.
The waste that is put into our storm drains goes directly into
Jamaica Bay and is polluting our waters.
Captain Scirica has informed us that the police will be doubling
their efforts to enforce this law.
We ask all to please discontinue this unhealthy practice.
Buckle Up or Buck Up
We all know seat belts save lives. The police department is
giving us added incentive to buckle up. Officers are now stopping
cars and issuing summonses to drivers who are not wearing a seat
belt.

Boulevard Mall Plan Set
The extension of Rockaway Boulevard's malls (grass medians)
is set for the late Spring 2001.
BHPOA President Jack King and Chairman of the Board John Walsh
met with Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer. Results of the discussion
will be reported at our June 20th meeting. The City will pay
the construction costs (approximately $800,000). The Association
will be responsible for the beautification and maintenance costs.
BHPOA is designing the mall signs.
In addition to improving property values, these medians will
make it easier to cross the Boulevard safely.
