The first Father's Day was
observed in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Sonora Louise Smart
Dodd or Washington first proposed the idea of a
"Father's Day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special
day to honor her father, William Smart, who was widowed when
his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart
was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by
himself.
Mrs. Dodd wanted Father's Day to
be celebrated on the first Sunday in June, her father's
birthday. However, the Spokane council couldn't get the
resolution through the first reading until the third Sunday
in June. Over the next decade, cities across America began
celebrating a day for fathers and in 1924 President Calvin
Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. It
wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed a
presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as
Father's Day.
In 1972, President Richard Nixon
established a permanent national observance of Father's Day
to be held on the third Sunday of June. This came almost
sixty years after Mother's Day had been proclaimed a National
day of observance. Interesting.

I have
been doubly blessed in my life - first with the
"World's Greatest Dad" and then with the
"World's Greatest Husband & Father of my
Children." The Lord has done incredible things in my
husband's life and my Dad's life. When I was little, my
Dad always made time for me. Not only was my Dad always
available to me, but he was a "surrogate" Dad
for many. My Dad drove a church bus which ministered to
"less fortunate" kids who could not otherwise
attend church services. They all loved him and would sit
in his lap sometimes during church. Many of the kids that
grew up in my neighborhood, who had less than ideal
fathers, also found a "Daddy" in my Dad. Now my
Dad has become "PaPa" and my children think he
is the greatest thing since "Mickey Mouse." My
Dad has never really "grown up." When he visits
us, even though he is not a teenager anymore, you can
still find him behaving like one. He is the first one to
jump on our trampoline or surf the waves at the beach. My
kids think he is the coolest "playmate" around.
I thank the Lord for giving me my Dad who also taught me
about Jesus and raised me in a Christian home. He gave me
a Godly heritage and I know because of this, we will all
have an eternal future together.

My
husband, Travis did not have an ideal childhood. In fact,
his Dad left Travis and his Mom when Travis was 13 years
old. You can read Travis'
testimony on how this
affected his life. The amazing thing is that even though
Travis did not have a good example of an earthly father,
he has been the most loving and attentive Dad to our
children. He is always available to the girls and they
love him so much. He is so faithful to read to the girls
at bedtime about Jesus and to teach them about our
Heavenly Father. Our oldest daughter, Ashley has already
accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and our 3
year old, Taylor, loves to sing about Jesus all day long.
Travis has fought his battles in this world but he has
NEVER let his personal struggles affect his relationship
with his children. He is SLOW to anger and quick to
apologize when he makes a mistake. As a result, my
children trust him and have an incredible bond with him.
I am so thankful to God for blessing me twice in my
lifetime with Godly men. I never take them for granted
and I realize how fortunate I am.

Bringing
Up Father
When I was a boy of 14,
my father was so ignorant
I could hardly stand to have
the old man around.
But when I got to be 21,
I was astonished at how much
the old man had learned in seven years.

"My Dad"
My Dad is a handsome man. He
is tall and his hair and skin is dark. He is a Christian
man who loves the Lord. My Dad's favorite part of his job
is his time off. For fun my Dad and I go to the grocery
store and play in the front yard. Going to the beach and
trying new restaurants is my Dad's favorite things to do.
I am glad he is my Dad because he loves me very much. I
also love him.

Two Prayers
by Andrew Gillies
Last night my little boy confessed
to me
Some childish wrong;
And kneeling at my knee
He prayed with tears--
Dear God, make me a man
Like Daddy--wise and strong;
I know you can.
Then while he slept
I knelt beside his bed,
Confessed my sins,
And prayed with low-bowed head.
O God, make me a child
Like my child here--
Pure, guileless,
Trusting Thee with faith sincere.
