Biography: Jacob Asbury Messinger
On January 16, 1890 Jacob and his wife provided one half acre of land in Laurel, Oregon for school purposes. A small unpainted building served as a schoolhouse until a larger school building was put up in 1898. In 1893 Jacob and his brother James Augustus Messinger "Gus" built the first store in Laurel Oregon. Jacob would haull freight to and from Portland to Laurel from 1893 to 1902. The store was later sold to edward C. Mulloy in 1904. In 1913 the store was torn down and was succeeded by the present Laurel store which was built a short distance south of the orriginal store. On May 24, 1923 Jacob allong with four other signers, signed the Articles of Incorporation for the Laurel Hall. Jacob was on of the first to own an Automobile in Laurel in 1914.
