Biography: Jacob Messinger

Jacob was born and raised in Coshocton, Coshocton County, Ohio on a Sunday, October 12, 1821. Around the late 1830's he moved with his family to Delaware County Indiana where he met and married Miss Anna Brown on Thursday, July 30, 1840 and they had four children: Phoebe, born Saturday, January 6, 1844; John William, born Thursday, April 2, 1846; Catherine Elizabeth, born Monday, September 10, 1849; Michael Frances, born Thursday, may 27, 1852. In the late 1850's they moved west to a town in Guthrie County, Iowa and Jacob Asbury was born on Thursday, September 26, 1861. In March of 1862 Jacob joined a large wagon train leaving Missouri for oregon. He and his wife Anna and their five children aged six months and accompanied him west across the rolling prairie, through the vital gap in the towering Rocky Mountains, and on towards their new life. Also traveling with them in the same wagon train were several of Jacob's brothers and sisters. They arrived in September, first stopping in Carlton, Yamhill County, Oregon where they stayed a short while and added two more children to the family: James Augustus, Born Wednesday, August 10, 1864; and Dora, Anna, born Monday, March 19, 1866. In 1876 they settled in Laurel on a homestead located on Finigan intersection of Laurelview Road where he farmed the land until his passing on Thursday, October 26, 1905.

Obituary: Jacob Messinger

Jacob Messinger, the aged father of J. A. Messinger, died at the home of his son in Laurel on Wednesday, and the funeral was held yesterday afternoon. Jacob Messinger was born in Coscocton County, Ohio, October 12, 1821. With his parents he moved to Delaware County, Indiana, in 1838; was married to Anna Brown July 30, 1840, and with his family moved to Guthrie county, Iowa, in 1853. In the spring of 1862 he started with his family for Oregon, traveling overland with ox teams. Arriving in this then sparcely settled country, he located in Yamhill County. Again, in 1876 he moved to Washington County, near Laurel, where he resided until his death. Five children survive him, J. W. Messinger, of Moro; Mrs. C. P Dix, of Portland; M. F. and Jacob A., of Laurel, and J. A. Messinger, of this city. The fuleral arrangements were in charge of W. O. Donelson of this city.

Obituary: Anna Brown

Mrs Anna Brown Messinger, wife of Jacob Messinger died at her home near Laurel, Monday Aug. 13, 1900, aged over 76 years. She was born in Ohio, May 24, 1824, and thirteen years later. with her parents, moved to Indianna. She was united in marriage July 30, 1840, to Jacob Messinger, who survives. Six children are living. In 1854 the family moved to Iowa, and in the spring of 1862 they started across the Plains with an ox team. They stopped one year in Umatilla County. Coming to the Willamette Valley, in 1863 they settled in Yamhill County, where they resided until 1876. They then came to this county, where they have since resided. Mrs. Messinger joined the M. E. Church at the age of fourteen years and was a faithful Christian until death. Mr. and Mrs Messinger spent over sixty years of wedded life together, their anniversary occuring in July of this year.
