Biography: James Augustus "Gus" Messinger
Gus attended White Cloud School and received 4th grade level. In 1893 Gus and his brother Jacob built the first store in Laurel Oregon. Gus sold the store inventory in 1903 and moved to Hillsboro and operated a store on 2nd Street near Main Street where a store called Economy Drud is now located in 1904 he sold the Laurel store to Edward C. Mulloy for $3000.00. In 1913 the store was torn down and was succeeded by the present Laurel store which was built a short distance south of the orriginal store. In 1895 Gus succeeded Edward C. Mulloy as Post Master of Laurel Oregon. In December of 1901 he bought 38 Acres of land in Laurel for $2650.00 Gus taught singing at the Baptist Church in laurel. Gus operated the Riverside Hotel in Sheridan, Yamhill Co., Oregon after leaving his store in Hillsboro
