Born to Clara and Levi Ackley in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on January 4, 1926, a special birthday shared with her grandson, Bonner, Betty was true to the crimson and cream of Oklahoma University where she met her husband Jean. The tall, dark and handsome Texan brought her to the Lone Star State when he began his career in the oil business. For 10 years they moved with the business from Ft. Worth to Oklahoma City, to Midland and Van before settling in Dallas in 1961 where they raised their three children, Jean M. Barrett, Jr., Gregory Ackley Barrett and Michele Barrett McDermett. No one was more surprised than Betty to be living in the same house for 43 years. But what a home it was. Betty hosted every group she belonged to and every friend she knew with a huge smile, open arms and lots of love and good food. Her friends in the Bible Study, Canterbury Book Club, Garden Key Study Club and Chi Omega Alumnae will all miss their dear friend. We will remember and appreciate Mom for her unconditional love, generosity, love of life, enthusiasm for everything her children and grandchildren participated in from birth until now and for her often outspoken behavior. Her grandchildren, John Barrett, Dallas; Jenny Barrett, Dallas; Austin Barrett, Boston; Blake Barrett, Boston; Bonner McDermett, Dallas and Megan McDermett, Dallas will remember "Grammy" for her love, humor and fine cooking, especially her fried chicken, mashed potatoes, chocolate pie and Belgian waffles. In addition to her immediate family, Betty is survived by her sister, Mary Stover, Tulsa and two nieces, Kathleen Law, Plano and Vicki Crocker, Tulsa. We are very grateful for the loving care she received during the last few weeks of her life. And especially for her dear friends, Jean Lewis and Mary Gratz, who were a constant source of love and support throughout her recovery and final days. Betty fought courageously to restore her strength but was unable to overcome the debilitating effects of a major stroke she suffered on December 13, 2003. Those wishing to honor Betty's memory are asked to contribute to: Make a Wish Foundation of North Texas, 5005 LBJ Fwy, Ste. 410 Dallas, TX 75244 ph: 972/450-9474. Memorial Service for Betty J.
