been married for nearly 70 years.
It doesn't seem like it's been that long," Homer said.
"Sure don't," Jenola said, beginning to let a smile overcome the wrinkles
in her earnest 87-year-old face.
Thinking back to Dec. 11, 1916 - their wedding day - brought a smile to Homer's
face, too, as he sat last week in the kitchen of their farm home off Ohio 104.
In fact, the 91-year-old laughed aloud as he began to share the details of their
first date.
The couple met in 1913 at the United Brethren Church on Ohio 50 east Of Londonderry.
"I was about 13, I reckon, when I first remember seeing him," Jenola
said. Homer would have been 17 and sporting a horse and buggy.
"I suppose he was good-lookin'. Anybody you went with back then though
was the whole cheese"
Homer asked to take Jenola and another couple home from church. Even with others
in the buggy he got up the courage to ask Jenola for another date.
From then on they were a couple. They went to church picnics, school spelling
bees and whiled away some hours just talking.
"I don't know what we talked about in them days," Jenola said laughing
again.
They may have, been making wedding plans because after an extended courtship
they figured - why not get hitched. The big day, however, was without a honeymoon.
"People didn't know what honeymoons was then. We've had a lot of trips
since then though," Jenola said.
For the first few months the couple lived divided - a mile apart in the homes
of each of their respective parents. But in March of 1917 they moved to Frankfort.
Homer had landed a job - farming.
"He worked on a farm for $1.10, had a house furnished, a garden and a milk
cow," Jenola said. She milked the cow. It wasn't hard but "sometimes
I'd have to give her a lick or two."
The fresh milk and vegetables from the garden provided for the Ackleys during
World War I when groceries were financially out of reach - $1.50 for a 25-pound
sack of flour, Jenola said.
In 1917, the couple moved to the site of their present home and farm. And in
the spring of 1918, the Ackleys had a daughter - Lavaughn.
While Jenola was inside the farm house, cooking, cleaning and attending to her
daughter, Homer was outside working the land with his hands.
"The plows you pulled with horses. You did everything the hard way. But
I liked practically all of it," he said.
When the plow was put to rest in the evening, the Ackleys would visit neighbors.
Or sometimes they attended a Farm Bureau meeting. It was a time for Jenola to
compare recipes with other farmer's wives. And it was a time for Homer to get
the latest crop reports from his fellow farmers.
But later those interests overlapped. Jenola was driving tractors while Homer
combined their land. And Homer did some taste-testing in the kitchen while Jenola
cooked.
What's kept the couple together long enough for them to have two grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren?
Jenola said the secret is having a life of "give and take."
Homer said his wife's good cooking hasn't hurt the relationship.
They agree that they still enjoy each
other's company.
