Sheridan's Scouts" is an entry in the index, and you can get a pretty fair description of them from that source. Basically they were, for want of a more appropriate
description for soldiers of that era, a "special forces" type outfit
consisting of about 60 hand-picked men that conducted long-range recon and
interdiction missions deep in enemy territory for Sheridan during his
Shenandoah Valley operations and in pursuit of Lee to Appomattox. They
often wore Confederate uniforms, kidnapped rebel officers, mingled with

rebel troops, and generally had some remarkable adventures. Their success
led Sheridan to boast at one point that he had such constant and thorough
knowledge of the whereabouts of Jubal Early's troops that he no longer
needed to post pickets.

Martin's name appears on a roster of Sheridan's Scouts in the National Archives, and his signature appears in a ledger recording the equipment received by these scouts.
Martin's military and pension files, this signature, which is distinctive, was an unquestionable
match with those that appear on his enlistment papers.

He enlisted in Co. G of the 12th MI Infantry on 12-22-61. On 4-6-62, he was
shot through both thighs (one bullet) at the battle of Shiloh. He recovered
at the Sisters of Charity Hospital in St. Louis, MO until July 15, 1862, and
was discharged from the army by a Surgeons's Certificate of Disability dated
7-31-62.

He re-enlisted on 12-24-62, this time with Co. G of the 7th MI Cavalry,

listing his age as 18. His father, Daniel, "signed" a certification of age
with an "X", followed by the notation "Daniel Ackley--his mark", indicating
illiteracy.

A note on the muster rolls for Custer's "Wolverine Brigade", consisting of
the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 7th Michigan Cavalry Regiments:

Custer's Brigade had the highest KIA numbers of any mounted brigade in the Union
Army, plus the fact that, after the surrender, they were kept in the service
for another 6-12 months performing duties in the west. Some got lost, some
got ticked off, some, like Martin, were on detached service and had trouble
hooking back up with their old units. 12 men from this brigade served as
scouts from Sheridan, and all but one were listed as deserters at war's end,
and had to have their records cleared later (around 1880) before they could
receive pensions. Martin had this problem.

He.23 Custer Council, Order of Stars and Stripes, was organized in March, 1877, with twenty-three members, all men who had seen service in the field during the bloody days of the Rebellion. The present membership is over fifty, and the officers are: H. C. Yerby, Chief Counselor; Alfred Leach, Senior Vice-Counselor; Martin L. Ackley, Junior Vice-Counselor; A. A. Lumbard, Rec. Sec.; John L. Nichols, Fin. Sec.; Henry H. Small.Treas.

This organization is similar to the Grand Army of the Republic. An encampment of "Our Country's Defenders" was partially organized in Leslie, but the Order of Stars and Stripes appears to have better suited the old soldiers, and the latter organization is in a flourishng condition.
