Mrs. Selena A. Ackley, one of the oldest residents of Allegheny, died of pneumonia
yesterday morning at the residence of her daughter Mrs. Charles T. Russell, 1004
Cedar Ave., Allegheny.
Mrs. Ackley was born 86 years ago in Philadelphia and spent her childhood in
Baltimore, Md. She journeyed by stage and canal with her mother to Johnstown,
Pa,
where whe was married to the late Mahlon F. Ackley of Allegheny, who was employed
on the Pennsylvania railroad, which was then in process of construction. Early
in
the 40's she came to Allegheny with her husband and had resided there ever since.
She saw the city grow from a straggling village to a metropolis. Mrs. Ackley
was
for many years a member of the North Avenue Methodist Episcopal church, and before
the formation of that church was, with her late husband, connected with the Arch
Street church of the same denomination. She was the mother of seven children,
of
whom five are now living - Mrs. Laura J. Raynor, Mrs. Selena A. Barto, Mrs. Maria
F. Russell and Mrs. Emma H. Russell of Allegheny and L. M. Ackley of Chicago.
Mrs. Selina Ann Ackley, widow of Mahlon F. Ackley and one of the oldest residents
of Allegheny died at 10:05 o'clock this morning at the home of her daughter,
Mrs.
M. Francis Russell, No. 1004 Cedar avenue, Allegheny. She was 85 years old. Mrs.
Ackley was born in Philadelphia December 15, 1815, but spent her childhood in
baltimore. With her husband, she moved to Allegheny city early in the forties.
Mrs.
Ackley was of an old English family. Her great uncle, Mr. Batchelor, founded
the
town of Bellevue, New York, noted as the site of Bellevue Hospital. Mrs. Ackley
was
a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a profound student of the Bible.
She
leaves four daughters, Mrs. Maria F. Russell, Mrs. Emma H. Russell, Mrs. Laura
J.
Raynor and Mrs. Selina A. Barto, all of Allegheny and L. M. Ackley, a member
of the
Chicago bar and formerly a well known Pittsburgh newspaper man. Eight grandchildren
also survive.
