Attorney, Turned the Weapon Upon Himself--
A Near Panic
Chicago, July 29 Attorney Lemuel Ackley was shot and killed by a policeman
in Judge Sabeth's court room here today.
Desk Sergeant Harry B Kellogg, with whom Ackley had some difficulty, fired
four shots into the attorney's body while court was in session. Kellogg then
turned the gun on himself. It is believed he is fatally injured.
The court room was in a panic.
Kellogg had been sentenced to serve 15 days in jail because of contempt of
court,
The policeman was alleged to have been living on some land which did not belong
to him and was ordered to vacate the premises some time ago. When he did not
leave, Ackley had Kellogg brought into court and the contempt sentence followed.

Chicago, July 29 Angered after being dispossessed of some property and fined
for contempt of court. Police Sergeant Henry D. Kellogg shot Lemuel Ackley, an
attorney. and wounded himself twice in Judge McDonald's court today..
The courtroom was crowded at the time. One of the bullets was said to have passed
between the judge's legs. Immediately after the shooting it was said Kellogg
was likely to die.
Judge McDonald Is chief justice of the criminal court.
Ackley died an hour after the shooting. Surgeons said `Kellogg would recover.

Lemuel Mahlon Ackley was born in 1857 in Allegheny City. He was graduated from
the
Western University of Pennsylvania with the class of 1879, and from the law
department of the University of Michigan with the class of 1885. Registered
November 30, 1880. Admitted Dec. 24, 1885, on motion of James S. young. His
preceptors were Charles S. Fetterman and S.A. Johnston. He removed to Chicago
in
September, 1887, where he is now in practice.

ACKLEY, LEMUEL M - Born at Allegheny, Pa., November 22, 1857. Son of Mahlon Ackley
and Selena Hammond Ackley; parents of American descent; first ancestors of the
Ackley name came to America about 1630 and located at Haddam, Conn. Educated
at
various institutions, among them Western University of Pensylvania, graduating
in
1879; law school of Michigan University from 1883 to 1885; after leaving college
in
1879, was for about four years on writing force of several Pittsburg, Pa., papers,
notably the Dispatch and the Commercial Gazette; was reporter, correspondent
and
editor successively; came to Chicago in 1887. Is republican in politics, and
though
in no way connected with any important commercial enterprises, has followed up
a
general practice of the law, to which he gives his best energies time and
attention.
