CROCKETT, Texas, April 4 (AP) -W A Ackley, 74 and his nephew Paul Ackley, 24,
both farmers and relatives of a white woman who accused Dave Tillis, 52, a negro,
of insulting her, were charged Monday night with murder in connection with lynching
of the negro Friday.
Three more men were being sought by Sheriff J L Hazlett following the arrest
of the pair in the Austino community near dismal Blackjack Forest, where the
negro was seized from the protection of Arch Maples, candidate for Sheriff, and

More Arrested In Negro Lynching
CROCKETT, Texas, Apr 5 9AP)- Three more relatives of a white woman who asserted
Dave Tillis, 52, a negro insulted her, were arrested in the Trinity River bottoms
Tuesday and charged with the murder of the negro victim of a lynching Friday
night.
The three men arrested were Rube Ackley, 35, cousin of the woman and son of
W A Ackley, 74, who was charged Monday with the crime; R L Downs, 64, and Albert
Smith, all farmers.
Paul Ackley, 24, brother of the woman, and W A Ackley are at liberty under $2500
bonds each on charges filed against them Monday.
Bond of $2500 each was allowed the trio arrested Tuesday by Justice of the
Peace Houston Betts, before whom formal murder charges were filed by Sheriff
J L Hazlett, who went into the bottomlands to continue the investigation into
the lynching of Tillis.
The five charged with the lynching waived examining trial and the Justice of
the peace will refer the cases to the Huston County grand jury which meets Aug
15. The quintet denied any complicity in the crime. He died in Jan 1946.2 He was buried in Creek Cemetery,
Lovelady, Houston , Texas.2
