THELMA MAE ACKLEY died peacefully in her sleep at her home, in New Ulm, on Saturday,
December 7, 2002 at the age of 93 years. Thelma Mae Ackley was born June 30,
1909 in Rodgers, Texas to parents Ollie W. Walker and Lillie (Miller) Walker.
She was baptized in 1915 at the First Baptist Church of Rodgers. On May 19, 1933
she married Clifford S. Ackley in Houston, Texas and they had two children, Dorris
Ann and Gaylen. In 1947, they moved to Sealy, where they owned The Confectionary.
In 1955, they began the Industry Telephone Company. She was the telephone operator
and took care of all aspects of the business while her husband worked for Southwestern
Bell in Sealy. In 1958, they made their home in New Ulm. Thelma and her son,
Gaylen ran the telephone company until her husband retired in 1972. She was one
of the founding members of the West End Baptist Church in Industry. She was a
former member of the Chapter of OES #324 in Columbus, and was a current member
of the Chapter of OES #611 in Bellville. During her years as a member, she served
several offices, including Worthy Matron. She was also a member of the Texas
Pioneer Telephone Association. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, husband,
son Gaylen Ackley, son-in-law Thomas P. Barton, and grandson Mark Ackley. She
is survived by her loving family which includes her daughter, Dorris Ann Barton
of Bay City; daughter-in-law Mary Ackley; grandchildren, Debbie and Mike Stavinoha
of Richmond, Robert and Diane Miller of Bastrop, Susie and Fermin Estraca of
Bay City, Michelle Ackley of Bellville, Harold and Robin Marek of New Ulm, and
Curt and Sheila Raeke of Industry and Larry Ackley of Austin. She is also survived
by her great grandchildren, John and April Jaster of Rosenberg, Brooke Davis
of Richmond, Jason and Amber Miller, Nathan and Jackie Koi, and Jennifer Miller
of Bastrop, Brandi Hoggatt, Wendi and Tommy Holland, Mendi Hoggatt and Paul Hoggatt,
Jr. of Bay City, Reese, Anthony and Braden Raeke of Industry, and Mason and Cameron
Marek of New Ulm, and Nicholas, Allison and Christopher Ackley of Bellville.
She is also survived by her great great grandchildren, Miranda Hoggatt of Bay
City, Chase and Ty Miller, and Avery and Trevor Koi of Bastrop. She is also survived
by her extended family which includes, Trina Schverak, Olean Williams, Blanca
Carrias, Judy Harris, Betty Smith, Esther McNeese and Patricia Groseclose. Funeral
Service for Thelma Mae Ackley will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, December 10,
2002 in the West End Baptist Church of Industry with Reverend Dennis Keen officiating.
Interment will follow in the New Ulm Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M.
to 5:30 P.M., Sunday in Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham. From 10:00 A.M. to 8:00
P.M., Monday in the Zaskoda Chapel in Industry and from 9:30 A.M. to service
time in the West End Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the West End Baptist
church, P.O. Box 67, Industry, TX 78944 or to Hospice Brazos Valley, 705 South
Austin, Brenham, TX 77833. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks
Chapel, 1306 West Main, Brenham, Texas 77833.
