On last Friday at the home of his son, Albert H., in Troy Center,
occurred the death of Captain Charles B. Ackley, aged 83 years. He was born in Ellisburg, NY, April 22, 1821, and was the eldest son of Gad and Mary
(Pond) Ackley. He remained at home until 16 years of age when he
engaged in sailing on the lakes. He came to Wisconsin and sailed with Capt. Ripley in 1837 on the boat Victor, which belonged to Solomon Juneau. He
followed this business for 20 years. At 19 he went to Europe and in 1841 to the West Indies. While in Europe he spent Christmas in the city of London and also visited many large ports on the Atlantic. His father was a brigadier general in the war of 1812) and presented his son with a copy of the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin printed in London in 1799 and which he carried with him in all his voyages.
He came to Wisconsin when a young man meeting Louisa M. Bunker,
sister of Nathaniel Bunker, on his way here, whom he married March 8, 1845, and with whom he lived until her death, July 31, 1871. Two children were born to them and both survive him. Mrs. William A. Logan of Eagle and Albert H. Ackley of Troy Center. A younger brother, H.M. Ackley, of Oconomowoc, also survives. He gave up sailing and settled on a farm in the town of Troy, where he spent the most of his life with the exception of the past five years which he spent with his daughter at Eagle. The funeral was held Monday at the M.E. Church in Troy Center. Rev.Mr. McClain officiated. The burial was beside his wife at
Evergreen Cemetery.
