Olive Taylor was born in 1878 on a farm in the town of Troy. It
was the homestead farm, her father having been born there, also, and his father
before him. She was the first born to Albert H Ackley and Mary Lackey
Ackley. There were three girls in this family.
Albert Ackley was a farmer and gardener. Olive recalls that her
dad used to haul vegetables by the wagon load to the different towns in the area
and sometimes to distant towns, on weekends.
The homestead farm was in the family a good many years. Olive's great grandfather
was a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 . Her grandfather
sailed the Great Lakes before settlingdown on the farm. She attended school in
a small country grade school near her home and went to high school at East Troy
for three years. Her folks used to board the teachers in those days. After listening
to the teachers'complaints about the abuses they had to suffer from some of their
students, Mr. Ackley vetoed any thoughts his
daughters might entertain about teaching. So they didn't take the final course
in high school.
Olive married Guy M. Taylor, also of the town of Troy, in 1901.
They had three children, two boys and a girl. The youngest boy passed away in
1966. The oldest boy, Don Taylor, is at present employed by the Highway Dept.
Her daughter, the eldest of the three children, was married to John W. Cusack,
now deceased.
Olive has six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and expecting the 14th.
She also has one great grandchild that is married, so can expect to be a great
great grandmother one of these days.
Olive and her husband, Guy, did quite a bit of traveling after the children
grew up and could look after things while they were gone. They covered 23 states
in their travels - North and South, East and West, and really enjoyed themselves
after many years of toil on the farm.
Guy Taylor passed away of a heart attack in 1955 about four years
after undergoing surgery for cancer. At the time of his demise he was working
at carpentry. The Taylors disposed of their farm in the depression days as the
boys were not in the best of health and therefore unable to operate the farm.
Olive did nursing in Obstetrics and baby sitting for about 23
years and, on the advise of her physician, went into retirement.
She attended the East Troy Methodist Church and, after her
marriage, attended the Methodist Church at a little community of Adams. She also
was at one time a member of the Royal Neighbors.
Olive had been living in an apartment by herself for sometime. In
November 1963, she spent some time at Lakeland Hospital and, after consultations
with her doctor and members of her family, it was decided that Olive enter the
new Walworth County Home rather than live alone with no one to look after should
she need attention. So, on November 11, 1963, she entered the County Home.
She is quite well pleased with her surroundings and can find no
complaints as all her wants and needs are taken care of. For pastime Olive attends
Press Club meetings, Co-op meetings, does a lot of knitting, sewing,
and crocheting such items as booties, carriage blankets, table cloths, afghans,
and what have you for her relatives and friends, and also for sale.
Olive has a very pleasant disposition, very easy to get along
with, and is well liked by other residents at the Home. At the present time she
is in good health and has no complaints even tho she does have a little ache
occasionally, but, as she told this writer, "At 90 who's going to start
complaining?"
Well, Olive, I sure appreciate the time you took to grant this
interview, and thank you very much. We all wish you many many more years of contented
life and the good Lord be with you always.
