H M Ackley of Oconomowoc Viewed Great Occurrence of 1935

Hon. Henry M Ackley of Oconomowoc remembers seeing Halley's comet when it made its last appearance in 1935. Mr Ackley says:
" My recollections of the comet are naturally somewhat vague, as I was such a young child at the time, and now after the lapse of so many years my impressions of that distant period have grown dim. Living as we did in the country we had little information or warning about the comet and hence its appearance was rather alarming to us. I remember going out in the evening to see it and how it grew brighter and brighter until to my youthful mind it seemed to fill the entire western sky with its brightness and to reflect a deep ruddy color over all the landscape. I remember too, that the folks were expecting it and we children were kept up to go out to see it. On the night I first saw it the sky was cloudy but the comet shone through, and when the clouds rolled away it was a sight which I can still remember just as if it took place a few days ago. The red reflection on the snow that covered every thing gave a wild and unearthly appearance to everything about us, and many of the less educated people were much troubled and feared some great calamity.
" Of course, I was to young to note clearly what the grown people of my own family thought of it"
